Ryan Mathews a Top 5 Fantasy Running Back?

Christopher Hanewinckel-US PRESSWIRE

Ryan Mathews is becoming a big name in fantasy football. He is rising up draft boards and is getting ranked as a top 5 runningback. There is a lot of talk out of Charger Park that Mathews will be taking a bulk of the carries for the Bolts.

What other backs are worth a selection before Ryan? Arian Foster is regarded as the top pick in the draft by many and then Ray Rice and Lesean McCoy round out the top 3. After those backs, what other runningbacks would you place higher than Mathews?

Maurice Jones-Drew is a monster, but he doesn’t get into the end zone often for the Jags. Marshawn Lynch always seems like a risky pick in Seattle. Chris Johnson went from the top pick in the draft to a mystery last season. Darren McFadden is an injury waiting to happen. Adrian Peterson is an injury that already happened and we have to wait and see how he bounces back from that. Same story for Matt Forte, Fred Jackson and Jamaal Charles.

Steven Jackson, Ahmad Bradshaw, Reggie Bush, Trent Richardson, Michael Turner?

After the Top 3 backs, it sure seems like you can take your pick on your favorite from the pack. Since most of you will be in fantasy leagues littered with Bolt fans, Mathews will be gone quickly.

What backs would you choose before Mathews?

I would take Matthews in the top 5 of backs but I’d look for Turner still.  He has the potential for running over folks and that makes fantasy football fun!

jamaal charles is very intriguing for me… but his goal line carries might be taking away by peyton hillis. Charles has got skills though!

This is a hard one for me because i know how good he can be.  He just hasn’t done it yet whether its injuries or Tolbert taking the goal line carries…I would have to put him just outside the top 5, like 6-7.  It would have too hard of a time passing up on MJD, AP, RR, McCoy,or Foster for Mathews.  A dude im excited for is DeMarco Murray in Dallas

@pels04 i have the same issue with Ryan.. i jumped on the train his rookie year and got burned… so i am really hesitant to pick him up because of that

Zero.  Wouldn’t take any over Mathews. Honestly.

    Not this year.

there is how good a player “can” be. and how good a player “is”. i’m a bolt fan, so i won’t be putting any RB over mathews. however i can not call him a top 5 RB until he”shows” it. if the money is on waiting to see who bounces back, or steps up, then it’s a three man race right now. Because 1) the O-line of the chargers is in a state of flux, good move on adding McClain. 2) this is the third year mathews has been talked up by the media and coaching staff. talk is cheap. 3) Norv is still calling the plays, and his best running play is, “UP THE MIDDLE”.
