M.I.B. Operation Worst to First

Men In Blue! Our third down defense was worst in the league.  Can we improve that?

Alright BoltGuys and BoltGals, including BoltFriends and BoltPals, it’s time for the moment you’ve all been waiting for….. aaaaand it’s being hosted by Randy, Paul and me.

Let’s debate the Deeeeeeeefeeeeeennnsseee.

Who will start at SS?

Do we have the depth we need at CB?

Is Weddle worthy of All-Pro status?

Is Jammer done?

Is Cason actually going to prove to not be a 1st round bust?

Can the Chargers fans understand what the 3-4 defensive line is responsible for?

Can Thomas push Garay to start at NT in our 3-4 ‘D’?

Should we have re-signed LaBoy?

Was taking an Ingram a mistake?

ETC!!!!

These are just some of the topics!!!!

Feel free to make your own!!!

BoltUp!!!!

LLLLEEEEGGGOOOO!!!!!

This is an open thread! Drop the hammer ya’ll!!!

    What is the job of the D-Line in a 3-4 d compared to a 4-3?

    • BoogaP

       @biggsybolt
       Far less than expected by some.  Those that are expecting sack numbers from DEs in a 3-4 will be sorely mistaken and have already been misinformed.

      • biggsybolt

         @BoogaP So true, as I see it none of the D line in a 3-4 should have big sack #s, their job is to get a push on the O-Line and hold blocks so that the Linbackers that are rushing can get through or around the O-Line and put pressure on the QB.

        • RMainwaring

           @biggsybolt  @BoogaP right. drove me crazy last year watching our 3 guys try to overpower 5 of their guys

    • RMainwaring

       @biggsybolt The 3-4 which is what the Chargers presently use means that they have 3 defenders up on the line and 4 linebackers usually drop back into coverage or 3 in coverage and sometimes one LB rushes the qb.

  • RMainwaring

    Defense defense defense. The big topic of late.  Manusky promised us an aggresive defense at the beginning of last season but it never materialized. I love the way our defense is starting to look after the additions of Melvin Ingram and Jarett Johnson and I’m looking forward to seeing how Jonas Mouton plays as well.

    • biggsybolt

       @RMainwaring So true, I hope Mouton is able to build a year like Butler did last.

      Freakin Getoff Mynutski, the most pitiful DC Ive seen in years. It seemed as if he was afraid to apply pressure. I mean really rushing only 2 guys against Tom Brady???

      • RMainwaring

         @biggsybolt exactly

  • http://@theroyallace JRoy16

    Not enthused to see mouton gettin pt… Hope he shuts me up

    • biggsybolt

       @JRoy16 Why? I see him in the rotation in the middle, giving Spikes and Butler a rest when needed. I don’t see him thrown in to the fire like Butler was last year.

      • http://@theroyallace JRoy16

        @biggsybolt Im just not sold on him yet.. Of course I have nothing to base it off of but I am excited to see him play

        • biggsybolt

           @JRoy16  @biggsybolt Fair enough. I dont think any of us can have a true feel for him yet. I too am excited to see him play.

    • BoogaP

       @JRoy16
       TBH, I cant WAIT to see what he can do.  Dude is ridiculously strong and a great fit next to Butler in the future!

      Thx bro for the comment!!

      BoltUp!!

    • PeteSpinning1

       @JRoy16 I don’t have an opinion either way, for reasons already stated. But, we drafted him for a reason, right? Let’s see if he can roll with the big boys.

  • JENFABULOUS

    @BoogaP @r_mainwaring @CallyUlrich @whittmcp LOL I thought it was an actual chat room! #blonde

    • r_mainwaring

      @JENFABULOUS @BoogaP @CallyUlrich @whittmcp We’re trying for that now.

      • CallyUlrich

        @r_mainwaring @JENFABULOUS @BoogaP Google hangout :)

        • JENFABULOUS

          @CallyUlrich @r_mainwaring @BoogaP Yeah we could all vid chat! haha

        • biggsybolt

          @JENFABULOUS @CallyUlrich @r_mainwaring @BoogaP so not feeling the love. go ahead leave me out thats fine,I can find a corner to pout in ;-P

        • BoogaP

          @JENFABULOUS @CallyUlrich @r_mainwaring Hey girl! U and I need to chat abt that! U da best! ;)

        • BoogaP

          @biggsybolt @JENFABULOUS @CallyUlrich @r_mainwaring Ur my boy bro!! Is that redundant……

        • biggsybolt

          @BoogaP @JENFABULOUS @CallyUlrich @r_mainwaring i know, but i also know i made you laugh

        • JENFABULOUS

          @biggsybolt @CallyUlrich @r_mainwaring @BoogaP *group hug*!!! :-)

        • CallyUlrich

          @JENFABULOUS @biggsybolt @r_mainwaring @BoogaP I’m back what did I miss?

        • JENFABULOUS

          @BoogaP You & I need to chat about video chat? O__O LOL

  • BoogaP

    I have a feeling that Stuckey might start at SS…

    What say you?

    • http://@theroyallace JRoy16

      @BoogaP Id love to see my guy BTaylor get it… My favorite rookie aside from supa Melvin… He’s just nasty

    • biggsybolt

       @BoogaP I really would like to see this. Stuckey has shown on special teams that he is a hard hitter.

      • http://@theroyallace JRoy16

        @biggsybolt @BoogaP Stuckey has been in line for a while… I wouldn’t be upset if he got it either

    • RMainwaring

       @BoogaP Depends on how Taylor does in camp.

    • PeteSpinning1

       @BoogaP I just assumed Bigby would win out with experience to start out the season. Good food for thought.

  • http://@theroyallace JRoy16

    Any chances this pagano takes us to wat Baltimore was/is

    • RMainwaring

       @JRoy16 I would think that like minds think alike so I’m gonna say yes.

    • BoogaP

       @JRoy16
       Great question, wish I knew for sure but my opinion is that both Norv and AJ need the defense to step up to keep their jobs.

      I expect MUCH more pressure and no more sitting back and waiting!

    • biggsybolt

       @JRoy16 I hope so. Being able to learn under Wade Phillips will be very helpful. Its all about the pressure!

      • http://@theroyallace JRoy16

        @biggsybolt Yup.. And I’m sure the brothers are sharing secrets and tips

        • biggsybolt

           @JRoy16  @biggsybolt So true!

    • PeteSpinning1

       @JRoy16 That’s a great defense they got in Baltimore. I would be ecstatic if we were viewed as being that good!

  • RMainwaring

    What do you think is better, 3-4 or the 4-3?

    • http://@theroyallace JRoy16

      @RMainwaring It’s all about personnel IMO… “The better and deeper the LB corps than run 3-4 if u like the DEs then run 4-3″ is the motto

    • BoogaP

       @RMainwaring
       I like the 3-4 FAAAAr better than 4-3. I like having more LBs as opposed to more DLmen personally.  More athleticism for LBs.

    • biggsybolt

       @RMainwaring Personally I like the 3-4, you can never tell who will be rushing and who will be dropping in to coverage.

    • PeteSpinning1

       @RMainwaring After the Steelers set the example in 2001.. 3-4 is the shiz!!!

  • ShawnMakeEmSay

    No stuckey doesn’t have the awareness to start

    • BoogaP

       @ShawnMakeEmSay
       I used to think the same thing.  He was injured his first true offseason. We will see.

      • biggsybolt

         @BoogaP  @ShawnMakeEmSay And had no offseason last year. I bet he will be a monster and allow the rookie to learn.

  • JENFABULOUS

    Cason really disappointed me last year.  He made a lot of penalties that cost us yards.  And made a lot of pass interferences (is that a word? LOL). Jammer & Phillips are falling off the radar.  Weddle & Garay stepped up a lot last year. I can’t wait to see Ingram in action!

    • biggsybolt

       @JENFABULOUS There she is!!! I bet Cason steps up this year.

    • BoogaP

       @JENFABULOUS
       Nice girl. Thx for joining in.  Cason was lost quite a bit for sure.  Jammer was the “flag hound.” The league has changed.  Dont breathe too hard on WRs!! lol.

      Ingram will be Def Rookie Of the year!!  Book it!

      • RMainwaring

         @BoogaP  @JENFABULOUS hope so.

    • RMainwaring

       @JENFABULOUS There you are. I agree, Cason disappointed me too. Especially when the player that I dislike the most,(Plaxico Burress) burned him more than once.

  • RMainwaring

    What player will surprise everyone this year defensively?

    • http://@theroyallace JRoy16

      @RMainwaring I say gilchrist turns heads.

      • RMainwaring

         @JRoy16  @RMainwaring I would love it if Shareece Wright came out of nowhere!

    • biggsybolt

       @RMainwaring LaGirl….. o wait she is here!!! My guess would be Reyes, I cant wait to see that battle between Reyes, Castillo and Martin.

      • RMainwaring

         @biggsybolt Haha LaBeeotch!

    • BoogaP

       @RMainwaring
       Sean Cattouse…..shhhhh….

      • http://@theroyallace JRoy16

        @BoogaP @RMainwaring Haha u serious??

        • RMainwaring

           @JRoy16  @BoogaP  @RMainwaring Hell yeah! Why not? I ain’t sayin he will but I’m always rooting for the underdog1

        • http://@theroyallace JRoy16

          @RMainwaring @BoogaP I’d love to see him make the team as well… I’m sure he’s a shoe in PS’er

        • BoogaP

           @JRoy16  @RMainwaring  @BoogaP
           I had him pegged as a 6 -7th rounder waaay before the draft. Cant help but root for him. lol. If he sticks he has prototypical size speed and strength for both Safety positions.   Could be a waste of time.  Or I might have called a gem!

          Ur KILLING IT BRO!!! JROY!^ for pres!!!!!

    • PeteSpinning1

       @RMainwaring Atari Bigby.

  • shockstrip

    @BoogaP @responsiblebrad It was ok. LOL it is AWESOME! Who wrote it?

  • biggsybolt

    Now that we have a few more voices here, What was the main reason the secondary looked like crap last season, was it they just cant play or was it the lack of pressure?

    • BoogaP

       @biggsybolt
       All about the lack of pressure. Sorry! lol. That q wasn’t for me! lol!! BOltUp

    • ShawnMakeEmSay

      @biggsybolt both I think mostly lack of pressure thou

      • http://@theroyallace JRoy16

        @ShawnMakeEmSay I agree..both were factors but the lack of play could have been disguised had we had more pressure

  • BoogaP

    I feel like Randy, Paul, Ernie, BoJack, Pete and I could do better on third down, what say you?

    BoltUp!!!

    • BoogaP

      Forgive me for not saying Jen, whit, Cally, Brandon, Bleu, and the serious MLB KJ, my lil sis!!!

      • JENFABULOUS

         @BoogaP I said in my interview that I would want to play defense! Just because of their craptastic performance LOL

        • RMainwaring

           @JENFABULOUS  @BoogaP I like the word “craptastic” LOL

    • biggsybolt

       @BoogaP Making stops on 3rd is huge for 2 reasons A) Gives the ball back to Phillip and boys. B) It gives the D a chance to rest and be fresh for the next drive!!

    • RMainwaring

       @BoogaP haha absolutely!

    • RMainwaring

       @BoogaP I wanna see more negative yards on 1st and 2nd down for the opposing offense. Stop em in the backfield. Stuff em

      • biggsybolt

         @RMainwaring  @BoogaP For sure! Make them go for 3rd and long and ATTACK!

    • PeteSpinning1

       @BoogaP I would take pride in getting destroyed by the smallest NFL player, and carted off the field.

  • biggsybolt

    So what do you guys think of Weddle? Was he worth the money? Did he deserve the probowl?

    • RMainwaring

       @biggsybolt I think so. 7 ints.  Lot of nay sayers but not me.

    • ShawnMakeEmSay

      @biggsybolt lol that question should of never made its way on here of course he was I can’t remember a time I was upset with him this year

    • PeteSpinning1

       @biggsybolt Yes, without a doubt. . I think the only time I saw anything questionable, was when he dodged that tackle. But, that guy was HUGE, and coming right at him fast!!! It wouldn’t have been cool to see him on the ground with a concussion.

  • RMainwaring

    I’m trying to get antoniogaray71  on here to leave a comment. That would be awesome.

  • BoogaP

    JRoy16 is that dude Jarvis huh?  Thats my dude! When I coach in the NFL, first hire is Jarvis, real talk. Ya’ll can think Im playin.

    • http://@theroyallace JRoy16

      @BoogaP Ready and willing

      • BoogaP

         @JRoy16  @BoogaP
         I knew that was u pimpin! BoltBeat look out now.

        My boy knows his ish.

  • RMainwaring

    How many total sacks for #95 this year? Does he have a good comeback year or is he on a downward spiral?

    • biggsybolt

       @RMainwaring If he is 100% Id say hes back to normal, and doing the Bowling celebration dance 10 times

    • http://@theroyallace JRoy16

      @RMainwaring if 100% I’ll give him 9.5-11 sacks

    • PeteSpinning1

       @RMainwaring I think we are gonna see a lot of sacks this year. Individual numbers may go down if two guys get hot. I would be happy with 7 or 8 for #95, if we are explosive.

      • RMainwaring

         @PeteSpinning1 How about 7 or 8 from all the linebackers?! #Boltup

  • RMainwaring

    I think there will be many sacks shared throughout the LB crew. Our beloved T-Rex will have at least 5.

  • biggsybolt

    Well I’ve tried to avoid this one for a little bit but, Is Jammer done yet and need to move to safety or will he come back and show the nay-sayers?

    • RMainwaring

       @biggsybolt Jammer will have a solid year as long as he doesn’t have to cover for more than an 5 minutes at a time!

      • biggsybolt

         @RMainwaring It all goes back to PRESSURE THE QB!!!

        • RMainwaring

           @biggsybolt Exactly!

    • PeteSpinning1

       @biggsybolt I think he will improve from last year.

  • RMainwaring

    Is this Larry English’s last hurrah or will he finally have a breakout year?

    • biggsybolt

       @RMainwaring I think that one is all one Coach Hurd the conditioning coach, he needs to keep him healthy and if healthy he will be a stud

    • PeteSpinning1

       @RMainwaring This is the most burning question I have, honestly! I would love to see him shake off those perceptions that he is a bust, and leave those injuries in the rear view mirror. He was, after all, a first round pick. He was considered the best option out there for us at his position that year.

      • RMainwaring

         @PeteSpinning1 Thanks for joining in Pete. My fear about English is that he will push himself TOO hard to try to prove himself and end up on the IR again. I agree with you. Leave the injuries behind and just go play and have fun..

  • biggsybolt

    What about Jarret Johnson, will he be the run stopper we have lacked in the past?

    • RMainwaring

       @biggsybolt And then some.

    • http://@theroyallace JRoy16

      @biggsybolt he will be the outside enforcer.. Don’t expect a big stat year from him but watch how he redirects the run towards the middle

      • biggsybolt

         @JRoy16  @biggsybolt Thats exactly what we’ve been  missing is someone to set the edge

    • PeteSpinning1

       @biggsybolt I think other than stuffing the run, that he will just bring that raw Baltimore attitude. Players will learn how to be tough from him.

  • RMainwaring

    What QB will the Chargers have the most INT’s against in the AFC West?

    • http://@theroyallace JRoy16

      @RMainwaring It’s a tie between whoever starts for the raiders and cassell

    • biggsybolt

       @RMainwaring I would say 3 from Palmer, 4 from Cassel and 6 from Manning

      • RMainwaring

         @biggsybolt I’ll be willing to bet Manning doesn’t even play a full season.

        • http://@theroyallace JRoy16

          @RMainwaring @biggsybolt I was just going to say I don’t believe manning will be playing by week 6

        • biggsybolt

           @JRoy16  @RMainwaring  Rotflmao, I’ll still say 6 we play him in week 5

        • http://@theroyallace JRoy16

          @biggsybolt @RMainwaring Nope we got broncos week 6

        • biggsybolt

           @JRoy16   @RMainwaring my bad, I thought it was 5, DAMN IT I want to be the team that crushed his neck

    • PeteSpinning1

       @RMainwaring Caleb Hanie ; )

  • RMainwaring

    I say it will be Peyton Manning.

  • RMainwaring

    CAN THE FRIGGIN SEASON START ALREADY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • biggsybolt

       @RMainwaring I know what you mean, I have about 0 access to the pads and besides you guys keep tweeting they are sucking badly

      • RMainwaring

         @biggsybolt They have the lowest payroll in baseball cuz they’re for sale.

        • biggsybolt

           @RMainwaring thats been a problem since the times of Kevin Towers, not the sale part but the payroll

  • BoogaP

    Sorry for those of you that missed me! which of course means all of you!!! I was on the phone with Pete Soinning and he and I are more tthan cool.  He remindded me that not only was I wrong that he is one of the biggest Chargers fans Ive ever known! BoltUp Pete!

    • RMainwaring

       @BoogaP YaY Pete!

    • RMainwaring

       @BoogaP Yay Pete!

    • PeteSpinning1

       @BoogaP Bolted UP!

  • http://@theroyallace JRoy16

    Liuget and Garay are penciled in… Who bookends the D-Line?

    • RMainwaring

       @JRoy16 Cam Thomas, Vaughn Martin, Luis Castillo, Kendall Reyes. Take your pick

    • RMainwaring

       @JRoy16 I like Cam Thomas…CAM SMASH and Kendall Reyes

      • http://@theroyallace JRoy16

        @RMainwaring Reyes is blessed to learn from the zoo!!

        • RMainwaring

           @JRoy16 I sincerely believe that we’ll have several standout players on defense this season.

      • PeteSpinning1

         @RMainwaring  @JRoy16 I agree.

    • biggsybolt

       @JRoy16 Of course Liuget will be one bookend. Like Randy I too am big on CAM SMASH, he will push Garay for starting time by week 5. The battle between Castillo, Reyes and Martin will be epic. Although I believe Castillo will win the job out of training camp I think Reyes will take over by mid-season.

  • Chargersfan4life

    How many interceptions will Eric Weddle have next season! :D

    • biggsybolt

       @Chargersfan4life 7 plus 3 forced fumbles and will score 3 TDs

    • http://@theroyallace JRoy16

      @Chargersfan4life 6 picks 2 TDs

    • PeteSpinning1

       @Chargersfan4life 8.

  • CallyUlrich

    What are your thoughts on Ingram?

    • http://@theroyallace JRoy16

      @CallyUlrich Monster!!!

    • PeteSpinning1

       @CallyUlrich I love his mean-mug. He never smiles at anything. I like players who are quiet & mysterious. It’s like he is picturing QB murder scenes in his head. Total toughness.

  • boltsfan1972

    I think Takeo said it best . The talent is there its upto the players to do it…

  • PeteSpinning1

    Bigby will win the starting SS position. His experience will win out, at least at first. I think that will be a good thing, so Taylor can develop behind him, and still get in the rotation. If Bigby under-performs, and our strong safety woes continue, then start Taylor, and see how he handles the pressure. If he doesn’t do well, at least he is getting experience. However, with Bigby in place, he won’t have to be thrown into the fire immediately, so he won’t be a rookie learning on the job. Even if he gets his number called mid-season, he would have an opportunity to see & feel the fast-paced tempo of the NFL, before he has to get out there and compete with the best. I am particularly excited about that position this year.

    Drafting Ingram was a must. So was cutting LaBoy. I feel bad how many snaps the guy had to take, but for taking the most snaps, he had some poor stats. You figure he could have gotten something done out there. I think we got Spikes out of that deal, and we needed to cut our losses with LaBoy & Manusky.

    As for Weddle I can’t believe his all-pro status is even in question. He was the rock on that defense. I only see him getting better from here. Garay will be our man, but Thomas WILL give him a run for his money. Forgive me if I stay away from Jammer & Cason questions this evening.. hahahaha.. I have already said enough there.  ; ) But, I would like to see us sign one more good CB. It would cinch the D up, and only the O-line would be a need at that point. Jenkins would be a good choice (per BoogaP). And, he & I did talk (which is the preferred way of squashing anything), and we found out there really isn’t anything to squash. We are back in business.. which is great!

    My two cents… this season offers the potential for our D to prove that bad drafts, and a WHACK coordinator were mainly responsible for last years 3rd down melt-down.  I am excited to see what our D-Line & linebacking corps can do this season!

  • PeteSpinning1

    Sorry about that last huge comment. I should have scrolled down first. It’s my first time on this type of thread here.. lol.

  • RESPONSIBLEBRAD

    @BoogaP it wont let me log in wtf????

  • Chargersfan4life

    I have a feeling that Eric Weddle will show up in the 2011 top 100. ;D

  • boltheadbrad

    I like the pick ups chargers made in the off season getting ingram and taylor, i think the defense will be a lot stronger this year making the other teams work hard for every yard.

  • SandyPeisner

    Bigsby will open the season, he was playing well for Packers got hurt, can he last the season? If the Bolts can get rush on QB the CB will be OK. It all starts with pass rush. Jammer still has some left in the take. Best we have at present. Yes Weddle is all pro. I think Pagano will use personal like Wade Phillips& Ron Rivera did. Barnes, Ingrham Butler will be on field more. Also Mouton keeping Phillips and Spikes fresh. Lots of blitzing. Cason is questionable at best. Letting go of Laboy was right move. I again think Bolts will revert back to Phillips & Rivera type defense. As far as Melvin, kid will become a star his second and third season. The pass rush heat on QB will solve many issues. Reyes will also start showing up. Like all defense in pass oriented game sack the QB. That’s key

  • Bleu

    start bigsby at safety bottom line its best to have depth especially at a position so physically aggressive. spread those snaps are evenly so you can gradually slide taylor in. our lb core is going to make alot of plays this year……. Bolt-up!. my issue us superbowl teams. we put alot of emphasis on offensive and defensive side of the ball but don’t forget that we were among the elite special teams units in the nfl nOw that philosophy seems to have disappeared.even with royal we are not going to get much of a spark from that side of the ball. we have no special teams ace thats worth speaking of other that wright and hester if I’m thinking correctly our leading special teams tackler was tolbert and he went to carolina

      @street It’s the NFL NUTWORK, they have their heads so far up their rectums that they’re about half way through their lower intestines!

       NFL Network’s Top 100 list, added to having to hear the voices of Warren Sapp, Jamie Dukes, and Brian Baldinger, provide me with more than 100 reasons to not watch “The Network” hardly ever.

      It’s a shame too.  I used to LOOOVE channel 212!!!
