Chargers Sign RB Ronnie Brown To 1-Year Deal

The Chargers just brought in their veteran runningback and I LOVE the selection! The Chargers signed former Dolphins RB Ronnie Brown to a 1-year deal and he will be backing up Ryan Mathews.

Brown has been the featured back in the Dolphins system and then he was not used correctly with the Philadelphia Eagles last season. Brown will be a threat catching balls out of the backfield and he can also block for our baby giraffe if needed. I love the other backs that we have on the roster, but this is a huge upgrade to the depth at the position.

If Mathews goes down, we will now have Ronnie Brown as insurance. I LOVE IT!

So friggin’ awesome!!! Guess that solves that debate!!! I loved what Brown did in Miami!!!

  • BoogaP

    WOOOOOOOOOOW!!!!! Wooooooow. Wooow. Wow.

Well, there you have it. we have a vet RB.  Ernie called it weeks and weeks ago as that would be who he would like us to pick up.

Can you say, “WildBolt?”  Just kidding…..or am I??? lol.

Love it, love it, love it. He is a Patriot killer!!!

  • BoogaP

AJ haters better shut their darn mouths, to put it lightly. I can hardly believe that Brown is a Charger.

A guy cleans the house, takes a shower, and BOOM!!!  We have Ronnie Brown. wow. Did I mention wow?

    • biggsybolt

@BoogaP just wondering if you’re referring to the JACKWAGON above who couldn’t build a team if his/her life depended on it?

      • RMainwaring

         @biggsybolt  @BoogaP LMFAO!!

  • RMainwaring

So cool. Now he needs to work on depth for the O line. I have to say, Smith is doing a hell of a job this year.

  • BoogaP

@jaysallday812 Agreed!!! Hard to believe. Like i said in comments. AJ haters better zip that lip! We have perfect blend of vets & youth. Wow

    • jaysallday812

@BoogaP a.j smith is a genius..A+ for this off season

      • BoogaP

@jaysallday812 I have NO problem agreeing whole-heartedly. wow. What an offseason. Loss for words… doesnt happen….EVER! lol.

  • boltsfan1972

Nice pick up by SD but I was routing for the youngsters on our team

    • PeteSpinning1

@boltsfan1972 Me too… I really was. But, it could have been worse. At least they didn’t sign Jackie Battle.. ick! Ronnie Brown was the only FA RB left. that I could stomach them signing. I feel confident about the decision. They must not have liked what they saw in OTS’s from the young ones. I’m sure they aren’t taking any chances this year.

      • PeteSpinning1

        **OTA’s I mean

      • LeonardoVelazquez

@PeteSpinning1 Yeah I don’t think they are taking any chances, except on the o-line and CBs I guess, but everything else seems solid or at least not lacking too much.

        • PeteSpinning1

@LeonardoVelazquez I agree. I have a feeling that they will bring in some more competition for one, or both of those positions, though. CB’s are what scare me most. I read a little blurb that Shareece Wright was doing a great job defending passes in OTA’s. But, other than an a fluff piece about Jammer “not being himself last season”, I haven’t seen anything encouraging about that area being addressed, or improving. I hope that Norv & AJ aren’t buying that crap. Anytime you start talking about moving a CB to SS, it basically means you have lost your speed to cover. And last years stats we horrid across the board.

  • Bolts_NFL_music

Sure good addition, but after all I´m little bit surprised that the signing of a vet RB happened that fast after these plans were put onhold. I don´t know the exact details of the contract, but after all it seems to be a good choice.

  • Huy Nguyen

Wow id say thats an upgrade from tolbert.

  • boltsfan1972

@BoogaP I love what AJ has done but it pisses me off why he hasnt done this every year!!!

  • BReisinger86

Shock and Excited at the same time!!! Solid addition, but at the same time i still hope Brinkley gets some action!

  • Bolts_NFL_music

I don´t know the exact details of the contract, but after all it seems to be a good choice – well a former Round 1 Pick 2 has to be a good addition, right? :)

  • DJ_Promos_

@Bolts_NFL_music hey bolts I heard u a big sports fan?. U should check out @MikeSullivan for great sports talk. Hes gaining major popularity

  • SteveDiaz

I hope Brinkley also gets some time in the rotation, but I feel a LOT better now that we have a solid veteran backup. I was a bit worried in case Matthews got hurt, but now we’ll still have Brown, Brinkley, McClain, and Hester. Maybe McClain and Hester can get in there for some power running!

  • BuckeyeDad

The Chargers just brought in there veteran runningback …

    Should be “their veteran runningback”…

    • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

       @BuckeyeDad thanks

  • Scott Miller

i think this is a good signing complements matthews we should be set in the backfield

  • Bleu

all im going to say is nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo !!!!……….

Now we know that the front office is completely sold on Matthews finishing the season.

Now we know the front office is NOT completely sure of Matthews finishing the season.

  • RussellGrant

This I like.  Another really strong runner in the backfield.  I wonder if we can work in a rotation of backs like we had with LT and Turner.

  • street

well he’s certainly approaching the end of his career, but the question is can he still be explosive in the screen and draw game. I’m still in shock that pead, hillman and james where are all gone by the time we picked at 78…

    • PeteSpinning1

@street I know! Watching them come off the board that fast was frustrating. I was really hoping for James or Hillman to end up with the Bolts. That would have made our offense ridiculously solid in the backfield. But, let’s hope that Reyes, Taylor, and Green make us all forget about that… and, our backfield seems to be pretty legit now, for the most part. Brown isn’t making me jump for joy, but I had a lot of question marks a week ago.

  • Jumpy Mcleish

shouldve resigned lt hes a hall of famer browns not n lt never been hurt brown has but aj smith dont like lt for some stupid reson

  • Robert Neumeyer

Ronnie Brown 136 yards and 1 touchdown in 16 games last year. And we wonder why we are the only franchise in our division not to have a ring?

  • JohnHambrick

I feel the dedication to winning is finally showing with this move and am even more exicted for this season!!!

  • MikeTuck

Absolutely great move to sign a Veteran backup to Mathews, especially having McClain in front of the two. I think this just about sewed up the offense, except for the RT position. I’m praying for Clary to get Clarity of the position but it’s been awhile and we should be looking for some real competition at RT. This O-line can be the barrels that get this team rolling and keep defenses on the field. But we need a solid 1st unit with a couple really good backups. Troutman was a great pick-up and hopefully if we get into the post season he’ll be coming back to help. Until then?

    • PeteSpinning1

@MikeTuck I know it may be wishful thinking, but I am hoping Henderson turns his game around, and beats out Clary. A couple times last season, I saw Clary literally get pushed back on his butt like a big brother pushes his little brother on the ground. If Henderson can at least play well enough to get in the rotation, I don’t see many guys being able to push a 300 pound 6 1/2 foot tall dude to the ground like that. Him and Gaither on either side would be The Twin Towers! He could also prove very beneficial in the running game if he can dominate players at the line with his size. Obviously, he was cut for being out of shape, and he isn’t elite at his position by a long way. But, a little part of me hopes he does very well, and takes over for Clary, until we can get a true replacement at RT. But, I agree we need more competition at the position. Maybe Henderson should have gone to the fat camp with Green.. lol.

  • LeonardoVelazquez

What are his pros and cons?  Is he injury prone?  Explosive?  Seems to be a great addition!

  • 1961 Fan

It is apparent  Smith & Turner are aware that Spanos has felt the HEAT from the fans. The two fools know this is their last year if they do not go deep into the playoffs. Now if these RB’s all make the 53 man roster they can platoon the ball carrying duties. I see where A. J. and Norv are more animated  and are conducting more interviews with the press because Spanos told them the Bolts lost a lot (returns) of season seats. The only quality draft choice (on paper) was # 1 Melvin Ingram if he turns out to be another Merriman and “juiced” then it will be counted as another failure. For now the Chargers look well balanced and like the Broncos, (situation at QB) if the O line can protect Rivers and he does not have to run and can have time to set up we may have as good a chance to be competitive at least in our division. As running backs go, you have to bring a truck load of them to camp because most of them will get dinged before the start of the regular season. If we win the division and get the first PO game here I will be happy. If we lucked out and got the AFC Championship game here I would have to send flowers to BoogaP.

    Part 2:
Hester may be cut in camp – just my prediction. It is just five weeks before camp opens.

    • arnie

@1961 Fan really? didn’t AJ trade up to get Hester?

  • MikeTuck

Injury prone but in a back up role. When healthy he’s a really good back.

  • Bleu

im not big on that guy ronnie brown

  • johnnyrotten57

It,s not the best choice, but it,s not the worst either. It doesn,t change the fact that L.T. needs to retire as a Charger!

  • jimthechimp

I also love the addition but gunna have to cut some young prospects is we keep him which we should…

  • 1961 Fan

    To: arnie
I do not recall if A. J. traded up to get Hester; I do remember A. J. picking Demitrus Byrd after the kid was in a car collision two weeks BEFORE the draft and spent Chargers money for a year and never played a down for the Bolts. Some fans thinks A. J. is a genius; I still say he is a fool.
    Pops

    • RMainwaring

@1961 Fan You don’t think A.J. is doing a decent job so far this year?

      • 1961 Fan

         @RMainwaring
        To: Randy M
The Bolts have not played a game yet; I have never thought A. J. was worth a can of beans. He is running on HOTT air and most fans know now that after five years of Norv we are “nowhere man” just like the Beatles song. He fired (or had the “boy” owner do it) my Marty, the last real coach we had. Results are the best indicator in the NFL; and this trio running the show are out to lunch.
        Pops

    • RMainwaring

@1961 Fan In April of 2008 San Diego shipped its fifth-round pick in 2008 and a second-round pick in 2009 to the New England Patriots to get into the third round (69th overall) to get Hester.

      • arnie

@RMainwaring  @1961 Fan and he’s(Hester) probably going to get cut this year. you see it depends on “What” you define as a “good job”. And what criteria your going to use, in order to say AJ is doing a good Job.If you want to say Aj has been able to find talent for the Chargers, dirt cheap, then he’s done an excellent job. if you want to say how AJ places a higher value on veteran players, because experience is priceless. fail. If you want to say having a players like LT, Sproles and VJ makes this team better, than without them, fail. Learning not to hard ball your proven pro-bowlers, when it come to contracts, (Gates) twice. fail. thinking  good Head Coaches are a dime a dozen, and replace one with your friend, and Superbowl success is a cinch. fail.bottom line, it takes more than finding talent, and hiring your buddy, to be a good GM. like 1962 Fan said “results ore the best indicator…”. 5 years of Norv, and the chargers have gone from 14-2, to 8-8. ( this is the “second season” of 8-8 under Norv)

  • biggsybolt

For some reason i don’t see Brinkley making the team. He has accrued enough time on the roster to be not eligible for the practice squad. I could be wrong. I see this signing more as a pass protection move as it was reported Mathews miss a blocking assignment last week, LT had the same problem early in his career. Having a finger get broke is bad luck not injury prone like some knuckleheads think.

    • biggsybolt

The reference to the broken finger is Mathews last season.

  • biggsybolt

@r_mainwaring I’m not sure he liked the team AJ built between 2004-2008!

  • MikeTuck

@PeteSpinning1 Totally, Henderson knows he has a good chance at competing here so hopefully he’ll bring himself in in shape and play to get a contract extention in SD. We get a RT that can really dominate his opponent it’s a playday for the offense.

  • MikeTuck

@1961 Fan Spanos my friend, he’s the one that listens to Smith. His Daddy bought the team and they finally got a team w/ Butler feeding Marty a good assemble. Smith’s ego didn’t want marty to have the power to hire his son ( which is a good coach) so he got rid of Marty. I think the Chargers are in great position for a new owner to take over and make a Franchise to be bargained with. We need a Mark Cuban on our side. Your points are well taken as I was screaming at the top of my lungs to fire both managers and force a sell. But were stuck with them this year so pray Pagano and Bisaccia can help pull it out.
