Will The Chargers Keep Four Tight Ends On The Roster?

The Chargers have a handful of tight ends on the roster right now. Antonio Gates is the stud at the top of the depth chart. After Gates on the depth chart, we have Randy McMichael, Dante Rosario and rookie Ladarius Green.

There has been talk that the Chargers could keep four tight ends on the roster, but that seems like an awful lot of tight ends. If we did end up keeping just three on the roster, who would be the odd man out?

Gates and Green will be on the roster. Gates is one of the best in the business and we expect some great things from him again this year. Pee Wee Green was drafted to be the future at the position and he has some raw receiving talent that the guys want to develop.

Norval has been raving about the pass catching abilities of Dante Rosario. Rosario has been impressive during OTAs and Chargers fans will remember him for his touchdown catch in the back of the end zone on opening day against us in 2008. The crowd was stunned silent when he came down with that football to win the game for the Panthers. Is there a possibility that he could edge out Randy McMichael for a job? Rosario is younger and brings more athleticism to the roster. He also can help on special teams.

Randy McMichael is a steady vet on the roster and he just signed a 2-year deal with the team. we were looking to get younger at the position in the offseason, but the market for tight ends was thin. He is one of the better blocking tight ends on the team and he had to be used as a blocker more often last season since our offensive line was in shambles.

There will be a competition between Rosario and McMichael to keep a roster spot. It will be possible that we keep both around as insurance for Antonio Gates OR we might just keep one of them. Who would be the odd man out?

    My guess is that we would keep 4. BUT, if we didn’t it would be Rosario that gets the axe.

    McMichael is so versatile and knows the playbook inside and out. Plus, he is our only good blocking TE. In 2 TE sets you have to have 1 that is a steady blocker.

    I hope that we keep McMichael. He was great last year w/ out getting much recognition.  It may not have shown in the stat line but he did so many important things for the Bolts last year.

    • biggsybolt

      @BoogaP was about to say the same thing! Phone took to long to load sign in…. need that blocker just in case the Oline fails again this year.

       @BoogaP i have a weird feeling on this one… i dont know why, but i do

      • BoogaP

         @epadaon
         You think that McMichael gets cut?

        • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

           @BoogaP it wouldnt surprise me if we made that roster move. for some reason i think he is fighting for his job.

        • CindiSpears

           @epadaon I hope you are wrong.  I think McMichael should stay.  We need the depth.

        • biggsybolt

          @epadaon @BoogaP what about Sperry? Too much accrued time for practice squad, I say he’s the one gone unless he makes it as a special teamer, I’d say we keep 4, loosing Manumanaula ( bet I butchered that) hurt for a little while, in the blocking dept.

        • Bleu

          @epadaon @BoogaP I dont care about norv raving about rosario I say he gets the boot if anything. not saying he is a bad player but I am saying he is no mcmichael who had a descent season as a blocker and recieving te last season…..

  • Boltfan53

    @BoogaP Yes they will

    • Bolts_NFL_music

      @Boltfan53 @boogap and do you think they will bring an additional vet RB?

      • biggsybolt

        @Bolts_NFL_music @BoogaP i don’t see it happening, the staff is happy with Banks and Brinkley showed he can be relied upon last yr

        • Bolts_NFL_music

          @biggsybolt @BoogaP Yeah I think the #Chargers RB roster looks good, but of course when speaking bout vet RB, one name sounds great: L……

        • biggsybolt

          @Bolts_NFL_music @BoogaP would b nice but won’t happen

        • BoogaP

          @Bolts_NFL_music @biggsybolt Does it rhyme with LaSmanian?

        • Bolts_NFL_music

          @BoogaP @biggsybolt that is right :) i know this had been said a 1000 times here, but i’m not gettin tired to say that it’d be a smart move

        • BoogaP

          @Bolts_NFL_music @biggsybolt Takin a quik break. Although it will never happen….Ive said this b4, if Dean wants 2 avoid blackouts…LT!LT!

        • BOLTSFAN1972

          @BoogaP @bolts_nfl_music @biggsybolt my only concern is LTs bad blood with the players causing drama

        • BOLTSFAN1972

          @BoogaP @bolts_nfl_music @biggsybolt in locker room but would like to see decent production outta him and him retire as a charger

        • biggsybolt

          @BOLTSFAN1972 @Bolts_NFL_music I think the players that r left are over it, just don’t think AJ is.. @BoogaP is right LT= sell outs

        • Boltfan53

          @BoogaP @Bolts_NFL_music @biggsybolt It would be great but AJ is not sentimental more than he is tempermental

        • Bolts_NFL_music

          @biggsybolt @boltsfan1972 @boogap yes that’s what i think too, the players are over it, A.J. sure is not

  • CindiSpears

    I think all the guys on the roster should have a tight end.  :)

    • RMainwaring

       @CindiSpears Typical answer from a GIRL! LOL

      • CindiSpears

         @RMainwaring Yup!  LOL

  • RMainwaring

    I hate to say it but I’m with Ernie. I have a feeling it might be McMichael but I guess we’ll know after training camp. Who knows, maybe they’ll keep all four. I’d like to see an increase in the roster limit maybe by one or two players.

  • Joel Ayala

    Why not keep Both Rosario and Mc micheals. And start off Green i’n the practice squad for insurance. In case of injury! That way we have 3 really good vets at TE.
