San Diego Chargers Release LB Travis LaBoy

So much for wondering who would be  the odd linebacker out in the battle for outside linebackers. The San Diego Chargers released Travis LaBoy today (Howard Balzer).

If you have been following this site for a while, you know that I was not a LaGirl fan in the first place! He always seemed to be the last player to the pile and never could set that edge that we needed. I remember at one point in the season, he had less tackles than Mike Tolbert. He finished the season with less sacks than Larry English and Larry Boy only played in 5 games!

The Chargers signed Jarret Johnson in the offseason and he will be the new starting outside linebacker. We also added Melvin Ingram with the first round pick in the draft. Larry English is supposed to be healthy and we also have Antwan Barnes and Shaun Phillips on the roster.

There just was not any room for Travis out here. By releasing LaBoy, the Chargers save $1.5 million.

I think they needed cap room. No great loss.

@RMainwaring Hopefully opening up some cap room to make a couple more FA moves!!

Making room for Florence and an RB (maybe Grant or Benson?).  If we can sign those two positions to add depth, this will have been the best offseason since we drafted Phillip (IMO).

@dorourke2312 i hope we can add those 2 positions with some of that money… would be awesome

In this economy I do not like to hear about anyone losing their job……But I can’t say Im sorry to hear that he is no longer a Charger.   I hope that he is picked up by another team as a backup but he was obviously not the answer at OLB.

    thank god lol

    • 619chargers4life

he was like dead weight. good luck laboy

  • RussellGrant

Well the writing was on the wall last season.  He didn’t produce.  There are younger hungry linebackers waiting for the spot.  LeBoy had to go.

  • Kiko Wilson

    I can dig that!!

  • Steve Carpenter

    Niiice, also dig that!

  • Jeffrey Perkins

Now the defense will play with 11 guys.

  • Matt Doss

I liked his special teams play though, don’t think I’ll miss him as the starting OLB

Addition through subtraction. It had to be done as anything would be an improvement. he honestly looked lost at times last year. Barnes sitting while LaBoy labored was a crime!

  • chargerrocket

Blame Manusky for bringing him along from the Niners! No loss.

  • 619chargers4life

now all they need to do is get rid of that funky dr. and med. staff.

  • Nydia Lopez

    Bout time:)

  • Joel Ayala

I think we all had a feeling!! No big loss! He was by far the weak link of our LBs. Good cap move too for our next additions. Vet CB and RB

    • BrandonReisinger

@wulffman68 Lol! 1 more shot for him! I know what kind of potential he has, I hope we all end up eating crow cause he stays healthy this year!!
