Which Veteran Runningback Is On The Chargers Radar?

The Chargers must be targeting one of these veteran runningbacks to fill that backup role. We went all the way through the draft and didn’t select a runningback until the 7th round. I don’t really think we would be trusting in Edwin Baker to be the backup runningback. Who could this veteran be?

We already had brought in former Kansas City Chief Jackie Battle for a visit. and he left without a contract offer, but he still remains a possibility. With the draft completed, it is time for us to bring in the final pieces to complete this roster. Here are a few names of veteran backs that are available:

Jackie Battle
Cadillac Williams
Justin Forsett
Ronnie Brown
Ryan Grant
Cedric Benson
Joseph Addai
Tim Hightower

My two favorite possibilities are Justin Forsett and Ronnie Brown (which likely means that we won’t sign either of them).

Brown would be an awesome veteran to add to the team. He has a ton of experience as a starter and has the ability to catch the ball out of the backfield.

Forsett has the “moves like Jagger”… don’t really know what it means, but all the kids are saying it and I like it! For this instance, it means that he has those Darren Sproles like abilities to make defenders look silly. He can take a screen pass for huge gains and always has the ability to bring it to the house when he gets in the open field.

We are still waiting for this back. Who could it be? Or are you fine with the rookie options that we just brought in?

My preference would be to bring in Grant (No relation), followed by Addai or Ronnie Brown.  I’d bring LT back before I’d go Cadillac, or Benson.

    • LeonardoVelazquez

       @RussellGrant LT!

      • RMainwaring

@LeonardoVelazquez  @RussellGrant A.J. already said he wasn’t gonna bring back LT.

        • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

@RMainwaring  @LeonardoVelazquez  @RussellGrant i would LOVE LT… but not happening.. cuz AJ said so.

        • RussellGrant

@epadaon  @RMainwaring  @LeonardoVelazquez That said, I would take LT back before I’d go Cadillac or Benson.  So I guess that counts as a never.

  • LeonardoVelazquez

I don’t think they’re planning on getting a new runningback.  I think keeping Jacob Hester was huge, and a part of the plan.  Since we lost Tolbert, (who they really liked) they may have brought in Le’Ron McClain to replace him and not so much to become the fullback starter (maybe he’ll play both positions, full and halfback?).  Idk.  I would love to see Mathews be the feature back and not have to share, but I don’t think we’ll see that.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

@LeonardoVelazquez i would love to have mathews as the featured back, but he gets injured so often… might need to get him off the field when there are opportunities.
i still think we bring in a vet

  • RMainwaring

I like Tim Hightower or Cedric Benson

    • biggsybolt

@RMainwaring would like Hightower even if it only for Josh and Hank to pull some Police Academy stunts! Otherwise Battle or Grant. But I think Brinkley will be in the mix. I hope they leave McClain as FB we’ve needed a real FB since LoNeil left.

      • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

@biggsybolt  @RMainwaring since we didnt get Dont’a Hightower, then we might as well get Tim Hightower just for those jokes

      • RMainwaring

@biggsybolt  Lorenzo Neil was a friggin’ beast! The FB should be big and beefy. Jacob Hester just doesn’t seem to fit the mold. They say he’s a good blocker though.

        • biggsybolt

@RMainwaring that’s #RealTalk! They might also move Frank Summers to RB also, remember him? Alot of us have liked him and wanted him on the 53 man roster last season. I’m not sure AJ likes what he sees in the FA pool right now.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

@RMainwaring i kind of like the idea of Hightower also… but really hate the idea of Cedric

      • biggsybolt

@epadaon @RMainwaring isn’t Benson older than LT??? and we know the rims fell off Cadillac years ago. I think Addai is as injury prone as….

    • BoogaP

I’d choose Benson over Hightower if I was in the scrub-a-dub-dub business.  LOL

  • chargerrocket

I’m really hoping Adonis Thomas/Toledo pans out from our UDFA pool. I think he has the quickness and acceleration to be effective on screen plays and draws. Not sure of his pass protection.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

@chargerrocket adonis thomas is stupid quick… and he has a cool name

      • chargerrocket

@epadaon I guess we don’t have Thomas anymore…not on our list. Kinda confusing. Oh well.

        • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

@chargerrocket That’s crazy.. Just saw that he really signed with the Atlanta Falcons?

  • BrandonReisinger

Tim Hightower would be my choice, I like his style! I live in Phoenix so i have got to see a lot of him

  • chargerrocket

Just saw video of Mike Hayes/Houston. Wow! Like him a lot better than Baker. Has potential to make team.

    • BoogaP

I talked to a friend of mine in Galveston who LOVED Hayes.  Has great hands and was very versatile at Houston.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

@chargerrocket I think Hayes has a better shot to make the roster also

  • wulffman68

Battle or brown would be good but I think they are going to use Hester in the role tolbert was in I think they gonna look for another DT

  • BoogaP

Now that the draft is over, I would like either Anthony Dixon or Kendall Hunter from the 49ers.  One of them is going to be the fall guy in the signing of LaMichael James. Id take either guy.  Would prefer Hunter, though.  Much more dynamic that Dizon.  Dixon is more of a thumper which might turn out to be a better compliment to Mathews.
I also wouldn’t mind Forsett as Ernie mentined a while back.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

@BoogaP Those definitely would be some nice options as well

  • Evilmd80

Being in Seattle, I can tell you that you don’t want Forsett!! He’s small and fairly quick, but he can’t move!! Every time he touched the ball it was only for 2 yards. He spends too much time dancing and not enough time running. Believe me, Pete Carroll loves competition and speed more than anything else and Forsett doesn’t really do a good job of either and thats why he’s a free agent!

If I were AJ, I’d bring in Grant. Has a lot of tread on his tires (despite being a little injury prone), but hasn’t had a ton of carries over the last 2 seasons like a guy like Benson has. He can catch and he runs HARD!!

  • A_Eme_O_Ere

For what it’s worth Mel Kiper called Edwin Baker the best 7th round selection of the draft.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

@None seems like Mel Kiper loved a few of our picks
