Will Larry English Finally Live Up To The What the Chargers had hoped.

Out of Northern Illinois, Larry English is one of only two Huskies to be named first team All-MAC three times (2006, 2007, 2008). Set the NIU career records for tackles for loss (63) and quarterback sacks (31.5), forced eight fumbles and recovered four. Ranks fifth all-time in MAC history in quarterback sacks and is tied for eighth in tackles for loss.

English was the Chargers pick number 16 in the 2009 draft. Clay Matthews was drafted by Green Bay 10 picks later.

We all know how that worked out for them.

Ah what could have been.

Since the draft, English has played in just 29 games and made four starts in three seasons. Foot injuries and other surgeries have limited him to 13 games the past two seasons.

The Chargers have a good core of linebackers but they should be better. With the addition of Jarret Johnson, they have gotten better. Don’t forget about Jonas Mouton. After spending his first season on injured reserve, I’m sure he’s chomping at the bit.

Will number 52 be the linebacker we saw in college or will he be yet another casualty?

He still has a chance to prove himself.

For Larry English, ’tis the season.

will Larry live up to expectations????
it depends on what you mean… my expectations have changed from the day he was drafted to today.

    • RMainwaring

@epadaon Don’t you think he’s expected to be a force on defense and stay healthy? How have your expectations changed?

      • epadaon

@RMainwaring i cant even expect to see this guy on the field. He had proven to be injury prone since he has put on the Chargers jersey and those are my expectations for him until he proves otherwise.

        • RMainwaring

@epadaon I expect him to stay healthy this year and do some damage on defense otherwise he’s gone.

@epadaon I expect him to stay healthy and be a force on the field. I’m sure that’s what the Chargers expect from him otherwise he’s gone.

@RMainwaring @epadaon I HOPE he will be a force on D… I EXPECT him to land on IR.

        • RMainwaring

@biggsybolt  Right. I guess I should have phrased the question differently. Will he live up to being the player the Chargers had hoped.

@RMainwaring @epadaon not trying to “harsh your gig” just a little word play ;-). To answer your Q, dude looks like a stud when healthy, I EXPECT him to show us that much, and pray he is @100% all season! Enjoy your articles keep’em coming!

I think in a lot of ways the Chargers are giving him the chance to really live up to it but are planning to cut their losses soon.  Look at the pickups they have made.  If he doesn’t pan out he’ll be irrelevant.  So I hope he gets out and tears it up

    • epadaon

@RussellGrant im hoping for the same… it would be awesome to get some production out of him

  • MikeTuck

I’m shocked he’s still in Chargers blue, yet I know Smith would like the heat for picking him go away. I’m for it too, but if he even gets a headache in the preseason I say let him go so we can fill the slot with a player that is going to be available when he’s needed. It’s time to cut our loses with a few players.

    • epadaon

       @MikeTuck papercut… GONE!!!! haha

    • RMainwaring

@MikeTuck I know, right. I don’t know what his contract is but I’m sure it’s why he’s still on this team. If he doesn’t produce this year he’ll be released to join the ranks of the top NFL first round draft busts.

Larry English is a true 4-3 DE. Hes a beast there. He won All Mac 3 times in a row playing DE, and not hybrid Linebacker. 4-3 teams are waiting and drooling over him being released.
