One Week Left Till Our Chargers Draft

The draft is one week away!! What will you all be doing on draft day?

Will you be that guy sitting in front of the television and seeing which players come off of the board and listening to the experts analyzing each pick OR will you just come back the next day and see who was selected for each team.

I will probably be that guy sitting in front of that television, eating some chips and probably some fried chicken. BUT I will also keep the computer in front of me and create a chat post or a game thread post for us all to join in and groan or cheer what AJ Smith does. Come join us here for the draft!

The question is, Will we be cheering or groaning after we make our selection?

    I’ll be here Ernie! Great idea!

    I was just watching the Highlight reel on Nick Perry during the Stanford game, and I got to say, I wasn’t that impressed. But Stanford’s Right Guard # 52 David DeCastro looked outstanding. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJQ_bUwsTbk&feature=player_detailpage

       @KennyRedman Perry looks great at times but seemed to disappear at others. Whoever drafts him has got to know how to push his buttons.

        @A_Eme_O_Ere @KennyRedman Sorry if this offends you but, anyone who believes we should go offense in the first rounds really doesn’t know our team. An Olineman won’t stop the high powered offences in our division! Pass rush is still the primary need! If Perry is brought in he already has the familiarity of one of his college coaches and that will make his transition into the pros alot easier! He reminds me of SP95 and adding youth to the outside will allow freshness to be rotated in. If (and its a huge word here) English is actually able to stay healthy this season just think of the rotation and situational players coming in and out, kinda like Steve Foley,SP95, Merriman ect. our D had killer instinct then and their coach is now the DC!

        • A_Eme_O_Ere

           @biggsybolt  No offense taken. If DeCastro is there at 18 I think we’d be fools not to take him. He’d replace Dielman immediately and Greene could prepare for taking over Clary’s spot on the right. Perry led the combine in several categories and looks great on tape. But they would definitely have to get someone to push his buttons the right way because there are a lot of games were he just completely disappeared.

        • KennyRedman

          @biggsybolt Actually Greg Manusky was our linebacker coach then and Rivera after him. But all credit goes to Wade Phillips. I’m a big believer that you draft for talent, and not for who is best one left at that position. That is how we got stuck with Buster “The Bust” Davis. But besides Melvin Ingram, Quinton Coples, and Courtney Upshaw, there isn’t a OLB/DE worth the 18th pick. These are you players with big motors that more often than not, require a double team. I might even throw in Whitney Mercilus. The rest are late 1st/ early to mid 2nd round talent. Perry dominated against lesser opponents, but when up against bigger lines, like Stanford’s Jonathan Martin, he was pretty much non-existent. I would not be pissed if we drafted Perry at 18, but I would feel like we reached. Look at it this way. In the first nine game of the season: Rivers was sacked 25 times, with 8 fumbles and 15 INT’s. the last 7 games of the season: 5 sacks, 1 fumble, and 5 INT’s. Mathews was averaging a full yard more per carry, with three 100+ rushing yards per game as apposed to one in the first half of the season. But we cant continue to use our tightends as lineman.

          @KennyRedman” John Pagano (born March 30, 1967) is the current defensive coordinator for the San Diego Chargers of the National Football League. He had been the teams linebackers coach since 2005. He has helped devolop linebackers such as Shawne Merriman and Shaun Phillips. [1] He was promoted to defensive coordinator on January 5, 2012. [2]” I pulled this quote from Wikipedia. While I don’t disagree with the stats you put up, they are what they are, but I believe they are a little misleading BigMac not being 100% for a majority of the season was a huge factor of those #s, and changed once BigLazy was brought in, Hardwick injured and Dombo playing the wrong position also factored in. My biggest concern on the Oline is Clary, and its not the amount of sacks he gave up as he gave up the 5th lowest amount of sacks of all the NFL for 2011, its the drive killing mistakes, holding, false starts etc. We also have to look back and see where AJ found Dirty Dielman, he wan an undrafted fa dlineman, cut and signed to the practice squad as a guard, go figure. As we saw with BossRoss and Marty, if the defense can’t stop opposing teams the offense has to work that much harder to win, that being said an awesome pass rush make even the crappiest secondary look full of Hall of Farmers, Cromartie is a great example of that. I also think we’d have to trade up to get some of the guys you listed, which means not having picks for other areas of need. Personally, I believe we need pass rush first, safety second, and really I’m up in the air past that as 3rd and past will be for depth, I do wish we could pick up Hillman tho, just not in the top 2 rounds. BoltUp. Please remember my comments here are not to offend or pissoff anyone (unless they are Faiders fans)!

          @biggsybolt John Pagano’s Coaching Experience2012 Defensive Coordinator, San Diego Chargers2007-11 – Linebackers, San Diego Chargers2005-06 – Assistant Linebackers-Quality Control, San Diego Chargers2002-04 – Assistant Linebackers Coach, San Diego Chargers1998-01 – Defensive Assistant, Indianapolis Colts1996-97 – Defensive Assistant, New Orleans Saints1995 – Graduate Assistant, University of Mississippi1994 – Graduate Assistant, Louisiana Tech1992-1993 – Defensive Coordinator, Overland High School, Aurora, Colorado1990-1991 – Assistant Coach, University of Nevada-Las Vegas1989 – Assistant Coach, Mesa State CollegeIn 2007 both Pagano and Rivera were given the title Linebackers coach, but until that point he was just an assistant LB coach. Wikipedia is miss-leading. It quoted the Chargers bio page but replaced “has coached linebackers since 2005″, to “has been the linebackers coach since 2005.” With that being said, I’m not disagreeing with you that A dominate pass rusher is our biggest need; I’m just saying that the talent that will be available at 18 is not worth the 18th pick. I would rather the Chargers trade down in the 1st and pick up somebody like Upshaw, or Whitney Mercilus, and move up in the second to get Harrison Smith. But DeCastro is an unbelievable talent, and with the drop in rookie pay structures, is a steal for an elite Offensive guard.

           @A_Eme_O_Ere  @biggsybolt
           Looked good on tape.  Led the combine in certain categories.

          Thanks for convincing me!! I’m staying put with wanting Perry.  Coaches are more important than ppl give them credit for.  Maybe Perry knew he would make a lil more money in the pros than in college! JUST KIDDING! That’s not mine.  Buddy of mine said that ish!  I see what you’re trying to say but @biggsybolt nailed it, Coach Barry!

        • BoogaP

           @KennyRedman  @biggsybolt
           Ppl, myself included, put waaay too much impetus on where a guy should go.  Meaning, like michaelombardi has made clear, Bill Walsh hated that ish!  They are either a guy that can help or they’re not!  No one looks back on a star player and says, “Well, we probably should have taken this player!” Defense, defense, defense.

  • DTron

    Please draft Dont’a Hightower, we will be drafting depth at two positions ILB and OLB.  Two birds with one stone!!

  • A_Eme_O_Ere

    I am taking Thursday and Friday of from work. Will watch the draft, hate AJ’s pick then come around to his kind of thinking. I will celebrate it by asking one of my kids to grill me up a 20 oz. Porterhouse. Then I’ll repeat that on Friday and Saturday.

  • A_Eme_O_Ere

    BTW- Greg Cosell, one of my favorite evaluators of draft talent, just compared Courtney Upshaw to Pittsburgh’s LaMarr Woodley.

  • MikeTuck

    I hope we get some great football players, some guys that love playing the game. A OLB, Safety,ILB, RB, CB, OT just fill or strenghthen the spots needed. Rivers has to have time to throw the ball, and we have to get a gameplan to attack the opposing QB. I still think the most important component is our Coach gameplanning to dominate insted of playing safe. But the work Smith did has made this draft alot easier than it could have been. The holes are smaller than they were. and we can’t have a all-pro at every position. To draft one gamechanger would be great. I’m with alot of guys on Boltbeat in that Hillman or James would be great backup for our RB’s. If Turner continues to Coach like he has we better get a Safety or Corner first because we can’t get pressure rushing 3-4 guys. If he goes back to a blitzing style D then get a OLB with speed. That will make a positive change.

  • KennyRedman

    There is a draft Party on the 26th from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.at the Q; Gate G; The Chargers store. $3 beers, $2 Hotdogs, and $1 candy for the kids. There will be three big screens, prizes, and the new Nike Charger jerseys. There will also be phot opportunities with players and cheer leaders.

  • MikeTuck

     @A_Eme_O_Ere , Biggsybolt, Kenny Redman; I don’t know if any of you have seen a piece out of Green Bay that is likening Guard Aminiasi Silatolu of Midwestern St U to Larry Allen and Jahari Evans both outstanding Guards from division 2 schools. 6′ 3 1/2″ , 313 lbs that ran a 5.33, jumped 32 and 9-2 while benching 28 times plus improved from 12-20 on the Wonderlic. Smart and Athletic. He’s been so impressive he’s moved up to 2nd round talk. This looks like just the Smith type pick, especially if they deal down for more 3nd and 3rd round picks. If this guy is going to be like Larry Allen he’s needed by the Chargers, especially since Dielman had to stop playing. Mike Lupati from Boise to SF was another comparisom. If Smith deals down and can pick up a Guard like this plus Harrison in the 2nd I can really see Smith doing this. Kid is from Texas where they build Football players! This is just a thought, but if it’s true to be able to do repair to the OLine and Secoundery why not.

    • biggsybolt

      @MikeTuck I haven’t but, I believe we have to pass rush first, weather trade up or down, to me that’s the biggest need, the safety second. Like I’ve said before rounds 3-7 are up in the air, but would love to see Hillman brought in, my friends down in SD that follow the Aztecs say he’s alot like sproles.
      Btw did you get my email? We should meet up.

  • MikeTuck

     @biggsybolt Yes I was saying that it sounded like something Smith would do. I wanted Perry from the start. he’s raw right now but his size and speed should  make are pass rush better. DE or OLB he’s the #1 for me. And I’d like them to add james or Hillman to play a role like Sproles. I watched james tear up USC and Pac 12 Schools. Hillman, well I’m always for local talent, then the west coast, and finally nationwide. No I didn’t catch your e-mail but would love to meat up.  [email protected]. Give me a e-mail today.
