Chargers Mock Draft: Who Do You Have At 18?

So I was invited in a mock draft where a bunch of bloggers from each team got together and made selections for their respective teams. Here is what it looked like when it came to the Chargers turn:

Indianapolis Colts – Andrew Luck
Washington Redskins – Robert Griffin
Minnesota Vikings – Matt Kalil
Cleveland Browns – Trent Richardson
Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Morris Claiborne
St. Louis Rams – Michael Floyd
Jacksonville Jaguars – Justin Blackmon
Miami Dolphins – Ryan Tannehill
Carolina Panthers – Fletcher Cox
Buffale Bills – Luke Kuechly
Kansas City Chiefs – David DeCastro
Seattle Seahawks – Melvin ingram
Arizona Cardinals – Riley Reiff
Dallas Cowboys – Quinton Coples
Philadelphia Eagles – Michael Brockers
New York Jets – Mark Barron
Cincinnati Bengals – Dre Kirkpatrick
San Diego Chargers = ?

After seeing who has been selected, who would you pick?

A number of players are still available to choose. Courtney Upshaw, Whitney Mercilus, Nick Perry, Dont’a Hightower just to name a few. Can we just select them ALL!?

Who would you have selected in this situation and who do you think AJ would select in this situation (because we know that those two things are different)?

Trade down! If not, toss up between Upshaw and Hightower on choice between OLB and MLB – Or, at a push big ole Dotari Poe for DT

    • RussellGrant

@Calum If Poe is on the board at 18 then I’d say pull the trigger.  Otherwise I’d say trade down or grab an edge rusher.  I still like Perry first.  USC makes some pretty sick linebackers, just ask Junior.

    In order
    Perry
    Mercilus
    Hightower
    Upshaw

  • BrandonReisinger

Trade Down, Pick up Harrison Smith late in the 1st. Use extra picks in later rounds to fill holes. AJ always seems to do better in the later rounds anyways!

  • biggsybolt

You know my choice Ernie, for the rest of you guys that don’t, I want Perry. If you’re asking why, well we have to remember that one of his coaches at USC is now our LB coach, which will make his transition into the NFL easier. I also think he would be getting to the QB more or making it easier for SP95 to do so. While the secondary needs help, if the pass rush sucks it makes even the best secondary look like crap.

  • the gorn

I would scratch Upshaw because AJ probably won’t pick him due to baggage.  If you like Hightower as much as Perry and Mercilus, I would trade down.

Here’s an analysis from Chicago re:  Perry vs. Mercilus

    I choose Nick Perry.

  • chargerrocket

I would pick Upshaw. AJ would trade down and select Smith.

trading up with Seattle to try and get Mark Barron makes a lot of sense…

trading back would make a lot of sense also since there are still plenty of options for us. who would want that spot though? Who would they be looking to draft?

  • zeus619

What about Shea McClellin from Boise St. Ranked number 2 OLB by Mike Mayock.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

@zeus619 i like McClellin a lot.. but think he is a second round guy. he has a history of concussions

  • MikeTuck

If Perry is there they’ll take him, he’s to good to pass on. If not I think they go Safety and take Harrison. Either way it helps the defense. If they can get Harrison  in the middle to late 20′s they’ll try and pick up another 2nd rounder to someone looking for Perry or other. With a couple 2nd’s they can add a LaMichael James and Bobby Wagner. So that a Safety and ILB and RB are all gotten before their third pick. I think this would be ideal and give Smith some wiggle room in the latter rounds. The other would be to take Trumaine Johnson insted of James and wait until the third or forth for Hillman. I think they’d come out smelling like a rose if that were the case. Safety,CB,ILB and RB with a 3rd rounder still to boot.

  • MikeTuck

Trading down for another 2nd makes way more sense and you won’t see Smith trading up for a safety or DE. By trading down they stand to add alot of good defensive  playmakers. First off if they can’t get a deal to move down Perry is their pick and a damn good pick. But if a deal can be made getting Harrison and Wagner beats Perry alone. That and the another 2nd to get Trumaine johnson to strengthen the secoundery. They made moves for OLB in free agency so I can see them trying to fill the secoundery with the 1st and secound. I also would like to see them get Nate Potter in the 4th round to help out the Oline.

  • BrandonReisinger

Anyone else have a seeking suspicion that AJ might trade up and grab Michael Floyd? He loves those big receivers that can go play jump ball!

    • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

@BrandonReisinger not for floyd… but could see it for Barron or DeCastro.

      • BrandonReisinger

@epadaon Predicting what AJ is going to do in the draft is about as easy as easy as catching a greased up pig using only your legs. But I’m pretty sure that he has never taken O-Line in the 1st so i see no reason that it would be any different this year. As far as Barron, he’s expressed his interest in Harrison Smith quite a bit so i see it as a possibility that he is just playing Jedi mind tricks and could go after Barron.

i think AJ Smith should trade down with Houston and select SS Harrison Smith in round 1 and then get OLB Ronnell Lewis and a CB in round 2.

  • olaoberg

    In this case? Pick perry.
If availible, trade down (browns?) and hopefully get Hightower and 2 picks in the second (Smith?). Well im just down with Donta and hopefully having the 2 stud ILBs for some nice amount of seasons (and probably one of em gonna be a leader and yell at sloppy ones).

  • Mike Barbee

    Give Charlie Joiner a reciever!
