Mel Kiper Shares Thoughts On Chargers Draft Possibilities

Mel Kiper jumped onto his twitter and shared his thoughts on the San Diego Chargers and our options in the draft. Here is what he had to say:

The San Diego Chargers are one of the toughest teams to project in rd one. They could take a pass rushing OLB, a CB, or a SS. And Rd 2 a RB.

Options for the Chargers at pick #18 would be OLB Chandler Jones, CB Stephon Gilmore, CB Dre Kirkpatrick. SS Harrison Smith.

The Chargers could look at either LaMichael James or Doug Martinin the 2nd rd, then possibly add S Antonio Allen on round 3.

I’m never shocked by what happens on draft day, but I can’t see Alabama S Mark Barron dropping past the Eagles at pick 15.

A.J. is loving this! Who will he pick?

I like that Kiper is on the right side of the football! DEFENSE DEFENSE DEFENSE!

Outside linebacker and strong safety both top the list for us, but I don’t see us drafting a corner in the first round. We just drafted Shareece Wright and Marcus Gilchrist last season and they have to step up.

Chandler Jones and Harrison Smith at 18? I would want to either trade up for Mark Barron or trade down and still have those guys available to draft.

If we don’t bring in that veteran runningback, then I like the possibilities of bringing in a little scat back to fill the role that Darren Sproles had. BUT we should be looking to fill a different hole in the second round and possibly go after that runningback in the 3rd (Ronnie Hillman?).  The second round should fill the hole that we didn’t pick up in the first.

The draft is 16 days away, what are you hoping for?

    Isn’t this the same Mel Kiper who said that Jimmy Clausen Would go 4th overall in the 2010 draft; Who said that there was no way he would get past Jacksonville with the 10th pick; Who bumbled over himself as Clausen fell out of the first to the Titans at 48th?

    • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

       @Sparticus hahahahha…. so you are saying… I KNOW WHAT YOU ARE SAYING!

      • RussellGrant

         @epadaon He has to say something.

  • sdboltzfan

    The cowboys or Eagles will snag Barron from what i hear. Which means pass rusher 1rst round, safety second. I would like to see Perry in the first , then trade up for Smith in the second. After that I lose a bit of interest. It will be suspenseful until its done as always.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

       @sdboltzfan i might lose interest after the 3rd round… but i hear ya!

    • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

       @sdboltzfan if we get Perry and Smith, I will be feeling alright.

  • 619chargers4life

    never trust Mel. thats my matto

    • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

       @619chargers4life never ever!

    • BoogaP

       @619chargers4life
       Unless it’s concerning his comment this year about the Bolts being extremely difficult to predict who they are going to pick.  Right?  lol

  • RussellGrant

    I see a pass rusher first.  Perry.  We can trade down a few picks and pick up a pick or two.  I would love to see a Safety in 2nd scat back in the 3rd.  But defense first this draft.  Feed the beast.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

       @RussellGrant feed the beast!!!!! it better be beastly!

    • BoogaP

       @RussellGrant
       Hook, line, and sinker.  You got it!

  • Special619

    How about a nose tackle people!!! Gary is old and gets pushed around too much. We need an upgrade ASAP

    • Special619

      Garay, silly spellcheck. If Jenkins still around in the second, we roll the dice and draft him. Why reach and draft an olb too early when SD has plenty of holes to fill

      • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

         @Special619 honestly wouldnt mind grabbing Brockers or someone like that… which nose tackle are you thinking? Poe?

        Garay is a stop gap for a year and then they will pass the torch over to Cam or someone they draft

        • Special619

           @epadaon Josh Chapman from Alabama, he played nose tackle in a 3-4 defense, and would be a nice fit for us.  He played through an ACL injury last year and had surgery towards the end of the season.  He won’t be himself till mid way through the season, so thats why he’s not being talked about much.  Mock drafts have him middle second – early third

        • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

           @Special619 Chapman would be a sweet addition to the defense. A big body that doesnt need to contribute right away and will be a huge man i nthe middle when he is ready to play! like that idea a lot!!!

  • Trinidadflores1

    I say let’s take a chance and go after the most definte impact pass rusher. Barron would be nice but with no pass rush were doomed from the start. When we have a 10+ sack rusher we will be unstoppable with all of our other pieces up front . The second pick go after a safety to solidify us as a stronger secondary. Now a days you have to be able to play man to man. We cannot do that without a threat up front.

  • Trinidadflores1

    We have the up front strength. we seen the push O-lines all year long, but we were unable to beat blockers with our slow OLB and DE. We need that Von miller impact and watch JJ SP Barnes Butler and the front four go honey badger eat up the middle. Then we can watch Jam, Weddle,and the rest of the gang lock down the back field.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

       @Trinidadflores1 go honeybadger!!! i like that!!! someone in that Von Miller and Aldon Smith type mold! I hope we find that guy!

  • sdboltzfan

    Who do you suggest Trinidad>?

  • Trinidadflores1

    Coples if we want to move up, but if we’re content at 18 best available. Ingram has that unstoppable speed n strength so does Perry. Those three can give us the best chance at the edges. I would be happy with either.

    • BoogaP

       @Trinidadflores1
       Coples.  No thanks. Ingram would be great but he won’t be there unless we make a serious move up.

      My hope is for Perry.  He has ties with LB coach Barry and is more than athletic enough to stand-up in a 3-4.  Coples is not a 3-4 OLB or DE.  No fit in our scheme whatsoever.

  • sdboltzfan

    Lets say based on the latest draft scenario on nfl.com all three of those players are gone at 18. We can choose between Mercilus and Upshaw, who would you take?

  • Trinidadflores1

    Hard to say , it’s hard to deny anyone with the 10 sacks like whitney, but upshaw is a raw corn feed scc player with a stacked DEF so he might of been more productive on a smaller program. But upshaw is quick and strong and he will get quicker and stronger. Whitney is strong but doesn’t seem as quick laterally as upshaw maybe lacking speed for that type of player we need. I’m looking for a quicker edge pass rusher, so that the front four can clean it up or vice versa.

  • sdboltzfan

    I cant wait for the draft, so many options!!! Please A.J dont screw it up!!!!!

  • Trinidadflores1

    I can’t wait either. AJ I have faith in, it’s Norbit turner I’m watching.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

       @Trinidadflores1 frickin Norbit!

  • RMainwaring

    Chargers need to sign a veteran RB instead of drafting one. Seems like lately, the RBs they draft in the later rounds end up on the practice squad only to be released later (Billy Latsko, Jordan Todman).

    • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

       @RMainwaring we wont be cutting lamichael james or doug martin, if they get drafted by us

      • RMainwaring

         @epadaon They better not consider drafting offense until the later rounds. They’ll most likely be gone by that time.Come on Ernie, think! lol

        • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

          @RMainwaring hahahaha.. just saying! No way we get them unless they slip like crazy

      • RMainwaring

         @epadaon Thanks Ernie. That gives me an idea for another article!

        • BoogaP

           @RMainwaring
           What if we take Richardson? Maybe it’s what if we take RG3 this time? J/k. Honestly just messing with ya! LOL!

          All joking aside, I really like Doug Martin and got to see him play at Boise St.  He looks and plays like a stud, 20 carry a ball game RB.  He will be the second RB off the board, imo. He won’t be a Charger.

          James…..hmmmm.  The more I think about it, the more I see A.J. attempting to atone for letting Sproles go for nothing.  Ahh, nevermind. Why am I trying to figure out what A.J. would do?  I used to live in Washington right on the border to Oregon.  Watched most of LaMichael’s games.  When healthy, he is a complete stud.  Very versatile.

          All that being said, we have done a ton in FA on the offensive side of the ball.  We still need a RB2 and depth at OL but the first two rounds, and most after that, MUST be defensive focused.  OLB and SS are what we need in first two rounds. Not necessarily in that order but I hope so.

          Nice article.  Welcome aboard man!!

  • CindiSpears

    I wish there was a draft for coaches.

    • RMainwaring

       @CindiSpears That’s a good idea or how about let the fans decide who coaches.

  • KennyRedman

    The Chargers better stop and pick up some long arms for the reaching Kiper has us doing. How about we Swap our 1st round pick with Clevlands 1st (Pick 18 to 22), and swap our 2nd’s (Pick 17 to 5). That way we can get both a decent pass rusher, and SS Harrison Smith.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

      @KennyRedman Can we get Cleveland to buy in on this?? Would be a perfect move for us if the Pats don’t draft Smith in the first round

  • alannivar

    I think the chargers should get a o-linemen in the first round because you can’t win a game without defense and an o-line. With an o-line you can run anywhere and you have more time to find receivers for completions. Since dielman retire they have tyronne green won’t cut it for a championship run. If they draft decastro or glenn then that solves the o-line situation. They trade for osi umenyiora because he is on they block and he wants a new contract. Finally they can get Harrison smith in the 2nd and lamicheal James in the 3rd.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

      @alannivar I agree about drafting an o-lineman, but A.J. Has shown he has been able to find lineman in the later rounds. We can get someone in the third round to compete.

      Would love Osi here and think AJ would love him here also, but we don’t have the cap to support him n this roster

      • RonEdde

         @epadaon  Being able to find a body to man the trenches has resulted in people like Jeremy Clary and Dumbroski. DeCastro brings a coveted natural nastiness to the mix, which is a characteristic Dielman had and is difficult to replace. You can throw any old body up there, or put quality pieces in place. The first technique allows a club to field a team, the second wins championships.

        • CindiSpears

           @RonEdde  @epadaon Well said.  I suppose Norv and Smith are in it to field a team.

  • SandyPeisner

    Defense Defense Pass Rusher 1 Safety or Pass Rusher 2 Guard 3 Running Back 4
    I can’t remember AJ taking Offense lineman 1st round. He resigned Gaither and Hardwick

  • johnnypin66

    A good pass rush can make average dbs look good or set NFL record,aka cromarte.with Perry you have to spend some time re-training him,in a 1st rnd pick like to see a impact player that can start

  • SandyPeisner

    Johnnypin66
    I completely agree with you.  You are 100% correct. We need pass rushers, Jammers lost a step, Cason and Gilchrist can;t cover forever. Last year The Chargers opponents made a sandwich, tied their shoes, called a friend and than completed a pass. We need pass rushers

  • DrewHernandez

    I think and hope we snag Nick Perry or Courtney Upshaw in the 1st round if they are available. The draft guru’s were not that high on Clay Mathews coming out of USC and now he is the best OLB in the game besides Ware. In the second round I hope we can draft LaMichael James aka Derron Sproils Jr. We need a dynamic change of pace RB.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

       @DrewHernandez i would love to get a sweet little back like that, but we still need some safety help.
