Morning Dump

With Chargers owner Dean Spanos watching the Peyton Manning sweepstakes from afar, he was reminded about 2004 when agent Tom Condon called him and told him that the player the team was going to draft No. 1, Eli Manning, would not play in San Diego because he questioned the team’s willingness to field a winning team.

The NFL dispersed 32 compensatory draft picks to 15 teams Monday, and the Chargers were awarded the 250th selection — all the way back in the seventh round. The 43rd pick of the final round was the fourth-lowest the league rewarded.

Plenty of NFL owners and general managers have had issues with agents from time to time, but few go as far in their criticisms as Chargers owner Dean Spanos and General Manager A.J. Smith, who describe agents as somewhere between useless and destructive.
