Another Backup Runningback To Consider For Chargers: Justin Forsett

The Chargers have been in search for a backup runningback with Mike Tolbert jetting out of town. We have heard names like Jackie Battle and Joseph Addai linked to the Chargers, but one of the backs that has flown under the radar and I think would be a good fit for the team is Justin Forsett.

Here is a little highlight video to remind you of what Forsett can do:

When was the last time you saw a back that was able to take the screen pass like that and have the ability to take it to the house? It wasn’t long at all since we had seen Darren Sproles do that for us and boy did we miss him last season!

Forsett is a little scat back that has been getting pushed deeper and deeper down the Seattle bench. He is a threat in the passing game and could be a valuable 3rd down back for the team. He wouldn’t be the pounder that Tolbert was, but he would add a different dimension to the offense. He would be able to give Norval the option to run him up the middle and get stuffed on 3rd-and-short situations. If we really missed Sproles so much last season, then we should try to add a back like him through free agency.

Since he wouldn’t be that banger down near the goal line, we would have to rely on Ryan Mathews to take over those situations and get Le’Ron McClain some touches down on that end also. I wanted Mathews to get more of those touches last season and I think he would be able to handle those duties. The biggest concern with Mathews down in that area is his bumbling fumbling handles on the football. A turnover that deep in enemy territory is heartbreaking.

Forsett would also be able to add depth in the punt returning and kick returning games. This might be needed if Eddie Royal or Richard Goodman were to go down with an injury.

Forsett would be one of my favorite choices for the backup job, with Addai and then Battle to follow. Which back do you want?

Of course I tried to recruit him on twitter and all I got was an “LOL”:

Matt Forte is supposedly unhappy since the signing of Michael Bush. He would be a GREAT addition to our backfield!

@SteveDiaz forte would be great… but he is going to be pricey in a trade and for his contract. he would also be the starting runningback on the roster and we already have Ryan

Hmmmm.  Not a word about himon the Chargers end.  This could be interesting.  Dude has mad quicks.  Gets to top speed in a hurry!  If we were to pick him up that would change when and where we draft a RB in April, imo. I wrote that would should take Rainey or Hillman in “Mock This!” in the third round.  If we pick up Forsett we would probably look to grab a thumper in the draft.  Which would also mean that we could use the third round to secure a TE or maybe OL depth.  Maybe then we could secure a “thumper” in the fifth round.  Maybe Terence Ganaway out of Baylor.  He is one of my favorite “big” backs in the draft.

Maybe get some flooring, stuff like that.  Maybe bed bath and beyond, I don’t know.  I don’t know if we’ll have enough time?

@BoogaP some frickin flooring at bed bath and beyond… hahahahhha!

it would be a pretty sweet move on our end.  he has that quickness and brings back memories of the lightning bug.

If Justin F is THAT good, why would Seattle part with him?

    • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

@tnorthrop thats a good point… but we were the team that let Darren Sproles walk

Justin Forsett does look great from the film clips – with the speed back,  acceleration is the vital difference – he seems to have it big time.
Forte has always looked a giant-killer when running AGAINST the Bolts.
