Chargers Sign Robert Meachem to 4-Year Deal

If you are like me this morning, you are finding out that the Chargers struck a deal with WR Robert Meachem late last night. They signed him to a 4-year deal for $25.9 million with $14 million in guarantees.

Meachem will immediately jump in the starting lineup and take over the spot that Vincent Jackson vacated. Meachem will start opposite of Malcom Floyd and Vincent Brown will be the guy in the slot.

Meachem has never started more than 8 games, so this will be his opportunity to see more playing time. I think he will do well with Philip Rivers throwing him the ball and in Norv Turner’s offense. I guess he won’t be wearing number 17 anymore.

Meachem will be a big time deep threat which will open up the underneath routes for Antonio Gates. Either Gates will be open or you hit Meachem over the top.

Love the signing. He was always underutilized in New Orleans

@Sparticus they have so many receivers that they throw at you out there… he will finally get his opportunity

      • biggsybolt

@epadaon @Sparticus I was thinking the same thing, I see Meachum putting up big numbers …… as long as we get big lazy signed. I also won’t be drafting VJax in my league this year, who’s throwing him the ball? Freeman, ouch! What other options are on Tampa to take coverage of him? I see him being doubled and tripled every play.

I like this signing to. There was no way we were going to match the bucs offer for VJ. While he is not VJ, he brings a different element than VJ which is speed. We need an oline now

  • CindiSpears

Like!  I can’t wait to see him in Charger blue!

  • RussellGrant

I was pretty pissed until I saw this last night.

He’s going to make half what Jackson would command and after being the number 4 option for the Saints, I’m pretty sure he’ll be hungry to be the one here.  Bring in hungry players with something to prove.

  • biggsybolt

Big lazy signed!!!! Now we can concentrate on D!

    • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

@biggsybolt i love that big lazy son of a gun!!!

      • biggsybolt

@epadaon what do you think about bringing back Cooper? I’m thinking special teams and back up, he is a ‘smart’ player and could help the development of the younger guys

        • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

@biggsybolt   we tried to keep him around last year and it just didnt work out..

  • Bleu

This is the best option we had and it was agood choice..

  • NickGoulart1

    Called it.

  • Bleu

This is the best option we had and it was agood choice… I still hate the fact that we lost VJ but its the way things go in the nfl. Meachem is a good.receiver people try to downplay him calling him a #3wr. The truth its the saints receiving core is so dangerous henderson colston moore or meachem.could be.#1 on almost any other team….

  • Boltman74

I say welcome Meachem. And unfortunately good bye VJ. We will miss you. If it were up to me, I would have signed him a 5 year deal a few years ago when we could have afforded it. AJ needs to keep his key players. I still believe VJ was one of them. This coming season will be a fun one. Go bolts!!!!

    • CindiSpears

@Boltman74 If AJ was gone instead of VJax we could have both.  Now that says power offense!

  • Boltman74

    I agree 110 percent

  • game time

You shouldn’t have gotten rid of vj

  • game time

You shouldn’t have gotten rid of vj chargers do stupid shit.

  • Bleu

Money is a major issue though if they would have kept vj we would not have ben able to upgrade in other areas…… Aj did the best thing

  • Boltman74

I don’t agree. If we had given him a 4 or 5 year deal a year or two ago, we would be ok

  • Boltman74

As to game time’s post, I agree to never should have let VJ go. Yes the Chargers make alot of bad decisions. I’m still a die hard San Diego Charger fan

  • Bleu

It is very difficult to manage a salary cap if it was easy anyone can do it. I agree they should of broke vj up a year ago but the thing about that I’d they would have to honor givin him all that money and then we would have to literally try to looc to the draft to fill all the holes we.have which would of left usloocn dumb. I hate that we lost vj to but the fact remains that this usa a team and we need to focus on the team as a whole.
