With all the issues that we had in the secondary last season, we have to look toward the future at the position and look at some prospects in the coming draft. Dre Kirkpatrick out of Alabama is one of the top corners entering the draft and our Chargers met with him at the combine:

Kirkpatrick is expected to be a mid-late first round draft pick and it would be surprising if the Chargers used their first pick on Kirkpatrick. We need to find some depth at the position with Quentin Jammer getting older and Antoine Cason struggling, but that would be a position we look toward later in the draft.
Kirkpatrick reminds me a lot of Quentin Jammer before he got old. He is not afraid of making the hit on guys and he likes to jam playes up at the line. Here is the scouting report from Pro Football Weekly:
• Rare length
• Sharp zone instincts
• Plants and closes
• Physical hitter
• Aggressive in the air — good ball production
• Gunner and jammer
• Battle-tested vs. top SEC receivers
• Only three career INTs
• Average recovery burst
• Inconsistent ball reactions
• Durability could be an issue
• Identity issues
• Character concerns
The Way We See It:
Lean, long-levered, athletic, zone cornerback with a rare combination of length, hitting ability and playmaking skill. Injury history and physical playing style lends to durability questions and was arrested in January for marijuana possession. Has a bust factor.
The Chargers probably met with Kirkpatrick to clear up any character concerns with him. He was recently arrested for marijuana possession and I am sure that we want to make sure that he keeps his nose clean.
