If Vincent Jackson Walks, Could Reggie Wayne Be Our Top Target?

Brian Spurlock-US PRESSWIRE

If Vincent Jackson were to walk in free agency, there are whispers that Reggie Wayne would be our number one target to be his replacement. Here is a little note from Pro Football Weekly:

If Vincent Jackson departs in free agency, the Chargers are going to need a No. 1 wide receiver. According to one team insider, that person could be Reggie Wayne, who is a free agent after 11 seasons with the Colts. Wayne played in a vertical passing game in Indianapolis similar to the one that the Chargers run, and he could step right in and be a go-to guy for Philip Rivers.

Wayne had a little dip in his production last year, but the Colts struggled hard last season with Peyton Manning sitting out the whole season. Wayne is winding down his career and he will be looking for a team that can bring him back into the playoffs and get him another chance at a championship. Could we be that team? We have missed the playoffs 2 seasons in a row, but we do have a high-powered offense and a quarterback that can get him the ball.

Wayne would be a good fit in our offense if VJ were to leave. He likely will come cheaper than Jackson and he still could be just as productive. He still has the ability to stretch the field and he is a good route runner. He could be that starting receiver we would need next to Malcom Floyd.

If we were to lose VJ, then I would be happy to bring on Wayne!

I don’t like any of this “if Jackson walks” stuff. We want and need Jackson. Don’t fuck this up AJ. Nuff said.

Wayne is on the downside of his career. Typical Charger move!

@sfritzen you dont think he has anything left in the tank? he definitely is on the down side of his career, but couldnt he contribute for a couple of seasons? he definitely was hurt with the poor quarterback play in Indy and he still put up decent numbers

@epadaon maybe but at that stage of career, price goes down because speed goes down and injuries mount

I’d rather see DJax take Vjaks place if he walks. Wayne is aging and Djax would be a great Charger. I really think because of Rivers work with Brown this past off season you’ll see him emerge as a great Bolt Reciever. it’s hard to get that much time with a QB and Rivers did the team a favor working with Brown as much as he did. That work will show this season, so the Chargers don’t need to go to great expense to get another quality WR unless he’s young and will be around to play opposite Brown. Floyd has another couple years of great play. The best thing would be to franchise Jackson 1 more year to let Brown get to another level. Draft the kid out of Fresno or another promising young WR and by the time Floyd leaves you’ll have tuned a couple of good WR. I think the Chargers focus (Franchise Jackson) should be at TE this year. Gates has a year to get that ring but foot injurys are a bugger. We need to draft a couple TE’s this year or get lucky and bag one in Free agency.

If DJax was a charger we would need one more fa receiver and we would be very very dangerous on special teams and with those deep routes and wr screens that man is a speeding bullet… Him along with an accurate rivers would make his numbers surpass t those he had in philly. But I think he stays in philly honestly……
