Chargers Free Agency Shopping List: Tom Zbikowski

What kind of a name is that!?! Tom Zbikowski!? It is a name you don’t know too well and that is why it makes it more of a possibility for AJ Smith to go after him.

Tom Zbikowski was the backup to Ed Reed with the Baltimore Ravens at strong safety and he has worked behind Reed for the last 4 years. He is becoming a free agent this offseason and will be looking for an opportunity to be a starter somewhere.

I spoke to RileyBabcock of Ebony Bird to get a little more insight on Zibby and here is what he had for us:

The Baltimore Ravens have a lot of free agents to worry about this offseason. One thing the Ravens organization has always done a great job of is keeping their own. GM Ozzie Newsome and Director of Player Personnel Eric DeCosta are the best in the biz when it comes to managing players but they have their hands full this offseason.

Zbikowski does not feel like a priority at the moment and is not expected to return to the Ravens. It looks like the Ravens would prefer to re-sign Haruki Nakumura who was drafted in the same year that Zbikowski and looks to be just as good.

Zibby is a very solid player that won’t wow you with playmaking ability but is a physical presence that won’t go unnoticed. His second profession, boxing, shows a lot about his character. He’s a very hard working, blue collar guy and will make some team happy. He could easily start for a team and become the star of a weak secondary but will fade in a strong one.

A physical presence in the secondary is needed on defense. He can be brought in and compete for the starting job with Darrell Stuckey. He also looks like he can contribute as a punt returner.

“He would be a star in a weak secondary!!!” Then let’s make this kid a star then!’

AJ Smith doesn’t usually go after the big dollar names and this could be a move that could actually happen. Could we see a pairing of Zibby and Eric Weddle in the secondary?  What do you all think about this idea?

If anything, he could punch someone out!

@chargerclipperfan I like Harrison Smith out of Notre Dame in the coming draft, and this guy is just like him with more seasoning and has been taught under the instruction of one of the best

      • chargerclipperfan

@epadaon yea i know if he’s cheap we should get him

I would rather draft a safety……. Let Stuckey do his thing since that what they want to do anyway and get barron man I’m telln u he is a textbook tackler and he is physical enough for all them big name tight ends…….. But ole boy from the ravens ain’t bad.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

@Bleu we will see how far barron slips down that draft. i would love to have barron and stuckey back there

      • Bleu

@epaddaon man if he slip down far enough they best take him

  • Bleu

Safety is a crucial position to be filld and especially SS. When u got action at a tackler like barron u got to take him he can play a versatile role bcuz of his s size speed n strength. Barron only had a hernia to man that’s nothing. He can be a rookie starter and still be efficient player

  • MikeTuck

This might not be a bad pickup at safety, they’d be comparable to Jake Scott and Dick Anderson. Those two did a hell of a job for the 72 Dolphins, and Weddle is looking like Dick Anderson with his around the ball capabilitys. This is one area that the Chargers could develope their defense into turnover city. Smith needs to go out and grab some veterans on defense, especially when they’ve played with great defenses.

  • Bleu

Makes sense not a bad pickup but im into physical atheletic dudes with big play ability not saying he isn’t capable of such feats but hand picking a player that has such a crucial role is the best way to go. Barron has g great physical attributes and is a sure tackler that played in an advanced collegiate defense and p played a strong role in that d. That kid is a monster man and his cover skills on te’s is quite exceptional not to mention his ability to the qb on blitzes and his ability to help stop the run. H he can be groomed well by the chargers no doubt especially with eweddle…………

@Bleu; your right as far as getting someone thet is better, my only concern is the price. Zbikowski is a work in progress but look at who he’s playing with and who picked him up. Your competing with one of the best safetys( if not the best) in football. So it’s a gamble but a damn good one to get him from Baltimore. That would allow for more to go after Mario Williams or Cliff Avril. And I tell you if you have Williams and Zbikowski and Draft Perry our speed goes up and our D looks alot better. Now you have alot of picks for linemen, Tightend, and a backup runningback/ reciever. LaMichael James would be awesome on this team. I know people keep talking about a W/R, but with James you get returner/reciever/runner. Think having Sproles back and playing like in NO.He’s played all over the place and his numbers reflect a team effort. His stock went down because of his Jr/Sr season slow down. But it’s because he was there weapon his soph. yr. and his stats were great his play better. They built the team up around him and there wasn’t the opportunitys or touches. he’s for real.

    • Bleu

@MikeTuck but I agree with u on lj. Bcuz of his versatility and speed he would new a big weapon

  • Bleu

Man baltimore is a great defense and I know he can probably contribute early but the thing with the chargers is they need to stop trying to fix the d and repair it!. Barron would be repairing it and he is a great physical specimen that can add muscle for the nfl. That’s all I’m saying.

  • Bleu

There are some players coming out of collegr that u know for sure are going to be great and barron is one of those

  • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

I like Barron a lot.. BUT we would have to hope that every team passes on him, for us to draft him. I would rather use our first round draft pick on a pass rusher and hope that Barron is there in the second. I dont know if he will last that long

    • Calum

@epadaon Draft OLB in 1st then trade back up to the end of the 1st for Barron? Think NO last year…

      • Bleu

        @Calum @epadaon exactly!…….

      • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

@Calum done and done.. im with it

        • Bleu

@epadaon @Calum football is a gamble bcuz u never know who will live up to expectations but one thing you never do is gamble scared be conservative but the goal is to win.
