Should The Chargers Trade Up In The Draft?

Matthew Emmons-US PRESSWIRE

Should we trade up in this year’s draft? We are sitting at spot number 18, but should we try to move up a few picks?

Is there a player in the top 10 that is worthy of this move? Would we want to trade some future draft picks in order to draft a player like Courtney Upshaw? Is Upshaw that much better than Nick Perry or Melvin Ingram to be worthy of moving up?

Upshaw looks like a phenomenal talent but  he doesn’t look like he will be available when we select at 18. He would fit nicely at the outside linebacker spot opposite of Shaun Phillips. He has that NASTY demeanor on defense and he looks like he could be inserted into the defense immediately to contribute. Pairing up Upshaw and Phillips on the outside and mixing in Antwan Barnes would be a nice group of pass rushers to get after the quarterback.

Is there any other player that we would try to move up in the draft for? Nick Perry? Melvin Ingram?

The only player that I think we should move up for is Upshaw, but the price tag for that is too high. It  sounds like a better option to move down in the draft and pick up more picks.

LB/DE Vinny Curry, LB Vontaze Burfict, S Mark Barron and a boat ton of offensive lineman could be available later in the draft. We just need to find that team that is willing to give up some picks. It would be nice to stock pile of few of these guys together and hopefully get a gem in one of them.

Would you make a move from the 18th spot? Trade up for Upshaw or down for more possibilities?

I think it’s funny how you say “pairing up Upshaw and Phillips on the outside and mixing in Antwan Barnes,” and don’t even include English in the conversation haha. But it’s so true, we can’t count English to play, ever. Chargers should definitely move up to get the best defensive player possible (that we need, which is basically at all positions), Idk who is the best in the draft, but Chargers should treat this as a make it or break it year and spend big to improve the defense. And I think AJ Smith will be a lot more aggressive this year, since it seems like it’s a final trial year for him.

@LeonardoVelazquez Yeah, it would be nice if English could contribute, but it’s obvious that the Chargers can’t count on him. He does have the talent–dude got 2 sacks against the Packers this year, but dude’s foot really needs to heal. I’ll guess we’ll have to wait and see. My guess is that if he isn’t 100% healthy by the end of camp, he will be gone.

I’d say we stay where we are. We are in desperate need of replenishing some key positions (OL, DB, LB) and with us always moving up the charts to grab someone, we’re losing some potential in the second round. In the next 2-3 years, we will be losing a lot of starters such as Hardwick, Dielman, Jammer, Garay, and Spikes.

  • MikeTuck

I still say if were going to look at a defensive player look at Perry. We need speed around those OT’s and close to home has it. You look close to home where they played their college they are more likely to stick around in the long run. It’s really bad when you get a great talent that gets to his prime and leaves not for money but to play close to home. USC has put out some of the best defenders in the past 2 years. Were still drawing off carrols team, and alot of talent was from southern Cal.

  • MikeTuck

The only way the Chargers move up in the draft is to take Mat Kalil Tackle USC, they should do this and they’d have them a great tackle for years to come. But this is a move that Smith won’t go for. This guy is the brother of a pro bowler so I would say yes grab him and you don’t have to look back!!!

    • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

@MikeTuck there is no way that we would trade up for kalil… like @All Charged Up said, he will likely be gone by the 4th pick and i think that the rams will take him at number 2…. if we traded that far up, i would want justin blackmon… BUT that would not help our biggest need on defense

  • All Charged Up

Trade up to Kalil?!?! are you joking? he’s gone by the 4th pick, without question. We’d have to pull a Julio Jones move and I do not want to see the Bolts lose 7 picks.

there is I am on the fence with this subject of trading up… we need more than just players… we have a roster full of just players. we need PLAYMAKERS!

is there going to be a playmaker available at pick 18? is Nick Perry OR Melvin Ingram going to be an impact player immediately? Upshaw is not a lock to be playmaker, but he is closest to that potential right now.

  • alannivar

Yes they should because there are many teams that need a linebackers and the Chargers need Upshaw to be contenders unless if they sign Mario Williams in the free agency

    • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

@alannivar welcome to the commenting section!!!

i would love to get Mario in a bolts uniform, but i doubt that we spend the money to bring him here. better get Upshaw then!

  • RussellGrant

According to the UT we have money for free agency. Now we need to see if AJ will pry open the wallet and make a real move in free agency, especially if he lets Vince Jackson walk. If he doesn’t make a move then he’d better make a deal to get a game changer in the draft. What would the jump to top 10 cost us though?

  • ScottKirby

NO WHY BOTHER. AJ Smith is one of the worst GMs in the NFL and wouldn’t know what to DO with a higher pick if he had one.

    • WoOdS4DaBoLtZ

@ScottKirby I absolutely completely disagree aj got Us gates, rivers, weedle, Phillips plus a slough of other players most teams out there would love to have but skipped on, you must not Remember that we hasn’t had a pick under 15 in quit some time so though we are picking a pick on the first round it’s not the cream of the crop all of those I just mentioned minus rivers were picked by aj in the latter rounds just because we didn’t go to thee payoffs doesn’t mean aj is a bad GM since he has been there we have been@the least a contender I remember not being the contender and was satisfied with 4 or 5 wins we hasn’t seen that or anything close to that since aj has been there he isn’t right in the draft every time no one is but he is right a hell of allot more than he is wrong so the bad GM argument is invalid because it simply incorrect

  • Johnnie Lovell

Trade up to that number 2 pick and get blackmon for a lot cheaper than VJ

  • Johnnie Lovell

Cuz AJ would waste the rest of the picks we’d trade away to get that high

  • Ernie Padaon

i would love to have Blackmon as a starter on our team… he is a beast

  • MikeTuck

Stick where we are, Nick Perry fits our first, Go after Mario Williams & Cliff Avril. If we get one of them we open the pick. Go after london Fletcher, Age yes but still steady and smart. Our main goal is to land a couple linemen for our offense, Evan Mathis Philli, Carl Nicks No, and keep Hardwich and Gaither under wraps. If they keep Gaither there, there’s your 1 or 2 pick a rt tackle to compliment him. I don’t think Our ROT will be here. Hang on to Mruczkowski did good backing Hardwich. With Green and Dielman if you land just one of the 2 Guards above we got a line to recond with. I realy would like to see Gaither, Mathis, Hardwich, Dielman & make our left Tackle a 1 or 2 priority. Then getting Mario Williams or Avril opposite Luigit would give Vaughn Martin a chance at DT as he really played well towards the end. Then if Nick Perry is there in the 1st you grab him and sign old man Fletcher to make a rotation of Butler Spikes and Fletcher. Barnes Perry and phillips on the outside. Now look to the bay area to steal Dashon Goldtien, but w/ Stuckey being primed they should steal Brandon Carr from KC. KC has a history of the best CB’s, make him ares and give Cason and mainly jammer a breather. I know, that’s alot of money but SD has it this year. Set down with the 3 recievers and try to work out 3 year contracts of reasonable value explaining it’s to bring in the likes of Mario Williams etc. The idea to all should be Superbowl.

  • MikeTuck

I agree totally, that’s all I’d trade up for. But I’d rather go at free agency while we have the money and the rest of the team gets signed. There’s a 3 year window here for Rivers Jackson, Floyd, Mathews and the lot. Veteran free agents give us the best shot to straighten the ship right now. The way you do that is make a serious statement, sign the 3 W?R for 3 years and make a big play for Mario Williams & Brandon Carr. Others will follow if you show your serious. Just like the Celtics did, you have to influence big freeagents by giving the eye for a ring now!!

  • MikeTuck

Ernie; I’ll have to disagree this time, I truely believe Williams or Avril would be worth going after since the time and money are right. Smith and Turner need this to cement them not being losers. And the team needs someone like Williams and Brandon Carr to say (sure I’ll sign for a little less money if you can bring those guys over. That’s why it’s important to act now and with time being prudent to get Jackson, Floyd and Brown to sign for 3 years. I am tired of the Floyd is always hurt. Who made some of the biggest catches this year. Gates is on his last legs, he sees management go hard after the caliber players above and he’s going to sacrifice to get him and Rivers that ring. This talk about drafting deep this year is for 2015. I agree get Nick Perry to help the OLB and DE. Go for the Gold befor their to old!!!

  • MikeTuck

I really agree, that was a if you were going to trade up, who’d be worth it. Kalil will be gone. There’s a draftee we should be able to get out of Midwestern that’s being compared to Mike Lupati and that’s good company. Lupati has been solid for SF. This is the kind of player that should be there in the 2nd round for our RT.

  • MikeTuck

I agree, I’ve been rooting for Smith to be right on English, the best he can do to extend his career is rest and play backup another year until he feels 100%. That’s why Nick Perry would be a score. Yes Donnie I know he’s a DE, but he’s got the speed #1 and the strenghth to play OLB. Barnes Phillips and Perry would be a luxury to have split air with each other. And I do believe Luigit can play DE especially with Williams or Avril on the other side. A big plus would be Mouton coming back and proving his chops with Butler and Spikes.

  • MikeTuck

Smiths strenghth remains getting some worth in the middle rounds, but I agree with you on moving up and the risk. Smith is our GM now so you have to be positive and hope for the best, which is in free agency and if we have the money this is the time to make a splash.

  • WoOdS4DaBoLtZ

I say hell to the no!!!!!! Don’t move up and don’t go down. Though it would be alright to get extra pix but if we can get Nick Perry right where we are then I say take what ya got and HIT UP FREE AGENCY HARD! I’m not saying buy up all the top free agents but we could use allot of average to above average talent and there will be a ton of that in fa pool from what I’ve seen Perry could be just as explosive as upshaw but@a cheeper price in the future and now plus we now have a guy on the squad who already knows his strengths and weaknesses let’s quit F-ing around and make some seriously smart decisions if we want something to happen next year we aren’t going find everything we need in the draft we have to have to have to use Fa pool in a smart affordable way we need more vets than rooks for next year we need help with the right now!! and right now we need smart experienced average to above average players we already have super stars , our whole team can’t be stars though that would be awesome plus aj and norval know they MUST MAKE Things HAPPEN NOW NOT THE NEXT YEAR OR THE ONE AFTER THAT !!!!!!!# I say they are going to go all out and fight to hold on to their reputation & pride or at least that’s the rout I hope they take

  • Slowboy619

I would say hell to the yes! On trading down..trading 18 for a first and second from a team like the browns bengles or pats who have ron’s of picks….there are actually some pretty good pass rusher in the later rounds like curry, Jenkins, Shea out of bosie etc. It would not surprise if they fool all of you and pick a wideout like Jeffrey’s (baby megaton)..but hey what do I know…

    • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

@Slowboy619 welcome to the comments and i love that first comment throwing out that curveball!!!!!

picking up Jeffery in the first and then get Curry and probably an o-lineman after that. i think i like this idea too much!
