Chargers Show Interest in DE/LB Vinny Curry at Senior Bowl Practice

by Chargers

The Chargers have shown interest in Marshall DE/LB Vinny Curry and the Chargers took some time to speak to him today at the North practice according to Shane P. Hallam of draftcountdown.com.

Here is the scouting report on Vinny Curry from Pro Football Weekly:

Solidly built, productive, pinned-ears right defensive end with a quick get-off who can shorten the corner and close once he gets a step — shows natural pass-rush ability. Strong wrap tackler. Emotional makeup — has a revved-up motor on the field and can overheat off the field if not handled properly. Tires quickly — is stronger and more explosive when battery is charged. Lacks elite flexibility and top-end speed, needs to develop his counter moves and will have to prove his mettle against more talented tackles. However, he has the tools to be an effective 4-3 edge rusher if paired with a patient, nurturing position coach.

Curry is expected to be drafted around the 3rd or 4th round. He would likely be a pass rushing outside linebacker in our system and would be worked in on passing downs like Antwan Barnes. From the scouting report from Pro Football Weekly, it seems that he doesn’t have the stamina to last as a starter and needs to have a good mentor.

If it weren’t for SP95, I’d advocate us to switch to a 4-3 defense.

    • epadaon says:

@All Charged Up i know what you mean… i wonder if SP can be a Dwight Freeney type defensive end. we have too many holes in our 3-4 defense.. let’s just hope they get the personnel needed for it next season.

@epadaon@All Charged Up The switch to a 4-3 seems to be a popular thing with a lot of fans. That would take a LOT of roster change. The Chargers have been building 3-4 personnel for years now. All of the D-Line and the linebackers. I just think that there would be more to a switch than most realize–getting 4-3 DEs, 4-3 OLBs, and transitioning back to a defense they haven’t played in years.

        • epadaon says:

@gtr_donald it’s a popular thing because people want to see SOMETHING change. The personnel we have on the team does not work with a 4-3 and the only way that we would do a drastic change like that is if we blew up the whole thing. that obviously is not happening since Norv is still holding the clipboard and we are hiring defensive coordinators from within.

The change on defense will be the level of aggressiveness and hopefully we bring in some playmakers through the draft

        • gtr_donald says:

@epadaon I’m kind of hoping for Alabama OLD Courtney Upshaw. One scout described him as Terrell Suggs, Jr. That works for me! The Chargers need more consistent pass rush. That’s the one major thing that they’re lacking.

        • epadaon says:

@gtr_donald im hoping for Upshaw also, but he keeps climbing up the draft charts. Latest word has him going as a top 15 player.

Just today, i sae that Vinny Curry is climbing up the board as a 2nd rounder.

if upshaw is not available, i would go after nick perry from USC

        • gtr_donald says:

@epadaon Those are the two players (Upshaw and Perry) that the mock drafts at CBS have the Chargers taking.

@PaulSwann @MrGetFlee99 @Thrill2310 Garbage. Vinny plays a ton of snaps pg, is productive, great motor & great man. Will be a steal.

  3. dougsmock says:

@Thrill2310 The NFL really has a way of bringing good players back to Earth … Toto, we’re not in Conference USA anymore!

  4. dougsmock says:

@Thrill2310 Scouts took note, for example, that he tired out in the 2010 WVU game … If you think about it, it makes a lot of sense.

  5. Banker6796 says:

Just laughing at that scouting report. Out of shape D-linemen wouldn’t be effective enough to get over 90 tackles in a season as Curry did his Jr year and 80 tackles his sr year despite being doubled and tripled on every play. He led the nation in tackles by a d-lineman in 2010. Out of shape D-linemen aren’t named conference defensive player of the year and aren’t named to a bunch of All American teams.

And I don’t get the “off the field” comment either. Kid was a model citizen for 5 years in Huntington at Marshall. No trouble, organized the hospital visits for kids, team captain.

    • epadaon says:

@Banker6796 interesting… did you get to see a lot of his games last season? he is moving up draft boards more and more and he is projected to be a 2nd round pick.. the more and more i hear about him, the more i like him… what is your scouting report of him?
