Norv Turner and AJ Smith will return in 2012

It has been confirmed.   San Diego Chargers Chairman of the Board & President Dean Spanos today officially ended speculation and confirmed that General Manager A.J. Smith and Head Coach Norv Turner will return in 2012.

Turners release has been called for over the past few seasons as fans have grown tired of his conservative game planning.  Apparently, Spanos does not hold the blackouts, game losses and trading of star players into account when making his decisions.

    welp!

    • CindiSpears

Sigh. Why would he bother making us wait? He was never considering firing them. I’m kinda irked. @epadaon

  • RussellGrant

I’m guessing no one else wanted the job or AJ has pictures of Dean Spanos doing something really bad. Either way, we get the diuretic duo back again for another year. I guess I can go back to drinking heavily.

    • Arowhead_Addict

I think Jeff Fischer would have taken it. SOlid roster with a franchise QB. Weak divisaion. Nice weather.

  • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

this is so dang frustrating!!! this rollercoaster ride will continue on… how long till we say fire norv in 2012? i bet we start that up in week 1! done and done!

  • ljd

What do we have to look forward to? Another year of frustration! I hope that everyone who wanted to see Norv and AJ go show the Spanos family their feelings by refusing to buy tickets to the games. It will mean more blackouts but then we’ll get to see some good football in their place!

  • Arowhead_Addict

Terrible move and I’m a Chiefs fan. Turer is a clown. SD should have won at least one, if not two SB’s by now.

  • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

we even have to say “Maybe Next Year” when we talk about firing our coach

  • the gorn

Disgusting. I’ve been a fan since the late 70s when Fouts ended his holdout. This team does its best to drive fans away. I rarely get the sense that this franchise does whatever it takes to win a championship. I don’t know how fans can continue to support a team that has less interest in winning than they do. Anyway, this is how ownership repays fan loyalty. At least Gene Klein had ambition!

  • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

the team has to do something to win the fans back…. maybe we sign Dwight Freeney and give VJ a long term contract

    • All Charged Up

Do you think he can make the transition into an OLB? Because I doubt he wants to come in and start at DE in a 34 scheme.

      • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

@All Charged Up im wondering if we still run that 3-4 defense… wondering if we keep manusky around. our personnel is almost better to run a 4-3…. tommie harris, liuget and garay are tackles and maybe freeney… we have never had that other outside linebacker since merriman left, so SP, Takeo and Donald… lets see what happens

      • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

@All Charged Up and i would still take a chance at him at OLB… could be a transition like Mario Williams made in Houston

  • the gorn

I feel sorry for Philip Rivers. He’s going to be 31 years old next season. That window is not going to stay open forever.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

@the gorn he is one of the guys that STRONGLY backed norv though…. part of the reason he is still around

      • the gorn

Yeah, I know. You have to wonder if Rivers was being politically correct. I realize that I’m just speculating.@epadaon

        • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

@the gorn wondered the same thing… he may have just gone too far with his love for him

        • CindiSpears

It’s not like the players can come out and say they dislike him, he’s their head coach. If they did that and he stays he makes their life miserable. It’s lose lose. @epadaon @the gorn

  • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

someone needs to exchange matt millen on this poster with dean spanos

    http://blacksportsonline.com/index/matt-stupidity-millen.jpg

    • the gorn

I think fans will have to wear paper sacks over their heads next year. That is if they actually attend games. @epadaon

    • RussellGrant

@epadaon How do I post it?

  • Damien Smrt

    dislike

  • Joshua Hinson

Wow! So much for us fans! Dislike!

  • Trong Lam

Dislike’s don’t do this any justice. It’s more like MOTHER FUCKEN SON OF BITCH BLEEP BLEEP BLEEEP BLEEEP. Ok there’s my response.

  • PowderblueDrew

Dean doesn’t care. It started a couple weeks ago as a conspiracy but I have to now question whether this truly is a move made to have the final push to LA completed. If Dean is this out of touch with reality and is too afraid to be a true leader than all I can think is in his mind when he sees the fans flee from the stands (which I intend to do) he can spin it rationalize to himself that the fan base turned on the team, caused the blackouts and obviously no longer wanted the team here.

Saddest day I have had as a bolts fan ever. I feel like my dog died.

My final words, I am a huge fan of 83, with AJ coming back we saw the last of him in SD. I look forward to watching him light it up somewhere else next season.

This past season was the last time I fork over my $2 grand a year donation in watching the games at the Q. I will still root for my team but I cannot give another dime to Spanos.

    • the gorn

Drew, I bet you can’t wait for John Spanos to become GM of our proud franchise. (I’m being facetious.) This team is screwing itself into irrelevance. @PowderblueDrew

      • PowderblueDrew

Well it looks like the fire is spreading unfortunately my rationale appears to be one of a 100 since the announcement. This is all a big orchestrated exit strategy for the bolts. I have to assume Norv knows he is a lame duck and the team is gone. He gets another big base salary and severance in 2013. When they go to LA I will officially hate our team because it will have been dirty politics and greed. so the born I won’t care when Dean Jr. Takes over for AJ!

        • RussellGrant

@PowderblueDrew But if they are planning the big jump to LA and haven’t figured out how to win they’ll never completely get the fan base there. The displaced Raider fans will outnumber new Charger fans and AJ or Baby Spanos cutting teeth won’t keep them from hitting the beach or any of a hundred other things to do that don’t involve the bolts. If this is the exit strategy, it’s dumber than a sack o’ hammers.

  • mikhel

I am a Chiefs fan, and am very happy you guys are bringing back these two guys . . but, in the back of my mind, I can’t help but feel bad for you. Now that the AFC West has some competition, the Chargers can’t simply ‘come back’ late in the season to win it. They will actually have to play well from the start, which I don’t think Norv or the GM can do. Good luck!

  • Heilios

I actually feel horrible for you guys. And being a Chiefs fan I understand your frustration. Hunt has been shafting our team for years! Hopefully Spanos will pull his head out of his ass an five you something to cheer (and me to boo) for!

  • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

its such a tragedy that Chiefs fans are coming in and trying to cheer us up… thanks Paddy! @Arowhead_Addict

    • RussellGrant

@epadaon@Arowhead_Addict Ernie, this is damn near surreal to see. Hi Chiefs fans. The only way this could be more odd would be for Raider fans to steal PCs so they can give their condolences too.

      • CindiSpears

ha ha, this could cause an Oakland riot! @RussellGrant @epadaon @Arowhead_Addict

      • Sparticus

@RussellGrant @epadaon @Arowhead_Addict No need to steal the PC’s….California Prisons already provide them.

  • DavidNelsonNM

@epadaon I wish Dean Spanos was my boss. My yearly reviews are due. So what if I can’t succeed, everyone likes me!

  • Big Jim

I too am a Chiefs fan but certainly feel your pain. Took us quite a while to rid ourselves of Carl Peterson and Herm Edwards. I have never understood why NFL teams like Turner so much. The only success he has enjoyed was as an offensive coordinator under Jimmie Johnson at Dallas. The man has failed at every head coaching job.

    • RussellGrant

@Big Jim I know. He had Aikman, Smith and Irvin on offense. Anyone would look like a genius with those weapons.

  • northidahobolt

It’s all about the cha ching…Spanos doesnt want to cut lose Norvirus and BJ because of the cash left to pay out their contracts. Plus, in the next few days we’re going to find out Fisher is somewhere else, Cowher bails and stays in TV along with Chuckie. I bet he didnt even offer them a reasonable salary- knowing that Norvirus and BJ have hands in the Spanos’ pocket. VJ has to stay, if he doesnt the fireworks wont just be at the 4th of July, we’ll hang BJ in effigy. I said this months ago after the Spanos interview on Chargers.com that the regime IS NOT WILLING TO DO WHAT IT TAKES TO WIN A SUPERBOWL!! Sorry I yelled but this really pisses me off to no end (David LoPan). A few side notes…23 Jam is done… trade bait… no switch to safety, he’s lost more than a step. LaGirl has to go…Clary has to go (contract) sign Gaither, fire Manusky… ideas?

    • CindiSpears

LaGirl and Manursky have got to go. Keep Gaither! @northidahobolt

    • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

@northidahobolt i think you are right with jammer… we need to make a move for jersey shore out of tennessee -> cortland finnegan… but he is a big hot head and doesnt fit into that AJ mold….

i would keep clary as the backup… as bad as he is at times, he still is better than dombo…

i keep hearing mike nolan for the DC spot

      • Sparticus

@epadaon @northidahobolt Clary is getting a little over-payed to be a backup. We should move him to gaurd, or just release him.

  • San Diego Charger Fans in Austin

I saw on ESPN that it is believed Dean was leaning towards letting Norv go and retaining only Smith, but Smith said if Norv goes I go. Not sure how much truth is in this train of thought. Not that it matters now…
