What’s up with Rivers?

What happened?  In the first 10 games of the season Philip Rivers was off.  Not a little off, record breaking, game losing, 17 interception throwing off.  What has allowed the turnaround in the last three games that turned the INT’s into TD’s?

Believe me, I am not complaining.  Well, a little, I have Rivers in FF and I lost quite a few match ups due to those 17 interceptions.  If you look at the numbers from the last two weeks it makes you wonder.  Why now?

The Chargers have scored  seventy-five points, have only had one turnover and four takeaways.  Rivers was 46-of-61 for 534 yards, six touchdowns and zero interceptions.  Gates had 13 catches, 138 yards and two touchdowns and Mathews checks in with 226 rushing yards.   I have even seen Rivers smiling on the sidelines and joking around.

So, I guess the question isn’t just what’s up with Rivers, but who are these Chargers?  I find it hard to believe Norvs contention that the entire turnaround is due to our new lineman Gaither.  According to Turner, the addition of Gaither has given the team continuity even “had an impact on our defense.”  Well, whatever his secret is I think if Gaither is that spectacular he should be our new head coach.  We all know that Turner can’t bring continuity to the team.

Gaither has done well, but didnt we have Big Mac starting their earlier in the year? is norv saying that McNeill is not as good as some scrub we picked up off the scrap heap? If that is the case, then why did we spend that money on Mac?

i am so tired of this jekyll and hyde act by these Bolts! they drive me loony

I think everyone is over an

    • CindiSpears

Well, it’s a drive made often by Chargers fans. @epadaon

      • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

        @CindiSpears i know right… its a rollercoaster every season!

  • BoJackRusso

Some folks in KC say he was only cut because of a hot headed decision by Todd Haley. I like MM but I think he is overrated. We need to move Dombrowski back inside to guard next season and let him compete for a starting spot there. I also thing Clary should be a guard instead of a tackle but he’s a little tall for a guard. MM and Dielman will probably retire, and it looks like Baxter will be the center of the future. I love Hardwick but we might not be able to keep him.

What sucks the most is everything we try to guess at is all speculation, and as always, SD fans are going to have to ‘Wait and see till next year’ all over again. And true fans like myself are biting our nails hoping for a miracle and we MAYBE yet doubtfully make the playoffs.

Just like last year, the Bolts heat up at the right time but probably will not even make the post season. It’s a rough job being a Charger fan, let me tell ya!

    • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

@BoJackRusso that is a lot of moving pieces for the offensive line for next season… there probably will be a lot of moves on that line though and we need to make some good draft picks at that position and make sure that we protect Philip

      • DavidConrique

I would love to see us pick strictly O linemen and D linemen or LBs

        • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

@DavidConrique dude… I hope we get that pass rushing LB and then just work on the trenches!! I am absolutely with you on that

        • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

@DavidConrique so you are OK with Gregory at safety OR do you think its time for Jammer to move over?

        • DavidConrique

I like Gregory, he lays people out! But Jammer to safety makes way more sense to me. Jammer still has years left in him… but not at CB. He is aging and doesn’t seem like he can handle the speedier WRs.Jammer and Weddle!! What a combo… maybe Gregory for nickel?

I think Cason deserves another shot… and we would be in good shape if we brought in someone like Cortland Finnegan. With Gilchrist or Shareece Wright as backups

        • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

@DavidConrique i agree with ALL of that!!! It is about that time for Jammer to move over

        • DavidConrique

I think Jammer would really enojy playing safety. If he makes the move he can probably retire as a Charger.

Floyd can’t stay healthy so hopefully we find some good undrafted WRs or a free agent to take his spot. We need to play Vincent Brown more, and damn… when the hell is Jordan Todman going to get his shot?? He should be our 3rd down back to help fill that huge gap when we lost Sproles. I honestly believe we can be superbowl contenders if we solidify our Oline, Dline and get a beast pass rushing LB

        • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

@DavidConrique i think jammer would be great at it too!!

i dont think that we need to completely rebuild like some people have been saying. we have a lot of good pieces still on this team and we can make a run next season

        • DavidConrique

I agree… injuries plagued us this year and thats why we were having problems. Sure Norv needs to go but it’s hard to put all the blame on him when our players were dropping like flies.

We need a Harbaugh type of coach. Isn’t there a coach from Illinois or somewhere who is really good and considering a move to the NFL? Bill Cowher would be nice too

        • CindiSpears

I agree, Jammer is still good, but not as fast as he used to be. Weddle is our hero! @DavidConrique

        • BoJackRusso

@DavidConrique Would love to get Courtland Finnegan, but that’s not going to happen. Jammer gets called for penalties so often because he mauled guys for years. He can’t keep up with the Raiders receivers or Denvers. He could be a good tandem with Weddle but we need better corners.

        • DavidConrique

Yeah we need a good corner. I think Cason is good but he’s still a work in progress and we need a corner who can handle the bigger more physical receivers. Cason did great last year, so I’m hoping he was just having issues getting caught up with the lockout and the broken hand this year.

        • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

@DavidConrique i think the corners would be a lot better if we could put more pressure on the QB. it all works together and having SP95 out for so long and a lack of pass rush on the other side hurts a lot

        • BoJackRusso

That’s very true. Garay is a beast inside but we need a pass rushing end. SP needs help to rush the QB more. I don’t think our front seven on D scares anybody at all, especially on passing downs. @epadaon @DavidConrique

        • DavidConrique

We have no pass rush so I completely agree. We need to draft some pass rushing DEs and LBs. I was upset that we drafted Liuget over some of the other players that were available like Aldon Smith. O line and Dline/OLB should be our focus. I think Donald Butler and Spikes make a pretty good combo. Butler is really turning into a stud on defense. Spikes has trouble dropping down in coverage but he’s still solid and worth holding on to for another two years

        • BoJackRusso

What sucks so much is the constant changes year to year with OC’s DC’s, how much do we miss DC Rivera now? Wade Phillips was a great DC too. Cam Cameron left. When Norv is gone, when/if AJ is gone, another new coach, unfamiliar with personnel, who knows what they’ll do in the draft? We still have some decent pieces in place but like I was saying earlier in the day it’s going to be ‘Wait and see what happens next year” and we as fans won’t know what to expect.

Rivera had great blitzing schemes, etc. I understand when the upward mobility opportunity comes to coaches in the NFL they have to go, but we always seem to be a day late and a dollar short in the end, like my mom used to tell me. We always get the second hand 99 cent store guy.

We need a proven coach now, not somebody to take a chance on. PR is what? 30 or 31 now? The window is closing. If the Spanoses don’t want to win they should sell the team instead of just teasing SD fans year after year.

        • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

@DavidConrique I would have loved Aldon Smith but i think san fran picked him up before we had a chance… dont know if we would have picked him up anyway, because AJ does what he does.

i like our middle linebackers, but again manusky needs to take out takeo on passing downs. Butler is awesome and i am interested to see how Jonas Mouton does next year

        • DavidConrique

For some reason I thought he was picked later but you were right he was 7th overall.

        • DavidConrique

Chris Peterson from Boise State would be interesting

        • DavidConrique

I think Chris Peterson from Boise State would be an interesting potential head coaching candidate

        • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

@DavidConrique i wish i knew more about peterson.. i seem to think that we will go with someone with NFL experience…

if they do bring in a college guy, i would really want to see who they bring in as coordinators

  • DavidConrique

I think everyone is over analyzing Norv Turner’s comments regarding Gaither. There is nothing wrong with him praising the guy for his effort. Everything he said about Gaither is true and should not be seen as an attack on Marcus McNeil. All he is saying is that our Oline dramatically improved since we picked him up and we would be way worse if we didn’t. He never even mentioned McNeil… so Idk how people are misinterpreting his comments.

We all can probably agree that Norv needs to go… but I have yet to see him diss one of his players. The teams still believes in Norv… should we keep him? Absolutely not… but it doesn’t help the team when the whole city only speaks negatively about the coach. I think people just want to find something negative to say about Norv… and thats why people are coming up with these ridiculous interpretations.

Just let them finish the season… Norv is already gone… hopefully he stays as an OC.

    • CindiSpears

Why are you bringing up McNeil? @DavidConrique

      • CindiSpears

Oh wait, I just read more comments. he he @DavidConrique

  • Bolts253

Coaches are actually doing some nice play calling now that their butts are on the line!

    • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

@Bolts253 thats what it seems to take every season

      • Bolts253

@epadaon@Bolts253 why is that? hopefully this is the last season coaches coach great just to save their asses

  • MikeTuck

Cindi; The first of the season Rivers was taking a pounding due to AJ’s lack of understanding that the Oline is not all glittery but the most inportant players on the team. After 5 games of just getting by, and no change in the gameplan Rivers started getting wild and he wasn’t happy. It got to his head about the lack of line play. Now with some guys thrown together to protect him their turning it around. What does that say about the line they had? I started my draft wish list with several Oline players and Smith again went for best available instead of need. The Chargers were very thin to begin with. Green was the only decent backup. Rivers like I’ve been saying is the same guy it’s been Turners lousey game planning and Oline problems.Like I said on another piece, Turner now has nothing to loose so he’s opening up the play book and allowing the guys to play. He was playing not to loose instead of going out there to dominate.

    • CindiSpears

This is how Norv coaches every time there is nothing to lose. If he always coached this way people would like him. Unfortunately, he coaches conservative until we are losing games and always in the playoffs. @MikeTuck
