Which Chargers Receivers Make the Cut?

It is going to be a tough decision and it keeps getting tougher and tougher the more games we play in the pre-season. There are four receivers that have already locked in their spots: Vincent Jackson, Malcom Floyd, Patrick Crayton and rookie Vincent Brown.

There is a dog fight for the last 2 spots on the roster though. The battle is between Seyi Ajirotutu, Richard Goodman, Bryan Walters and Kelley Washington.

Tutu and Washington have a resume that goes back to last season. They both had big moments on the team last year, but they have been quiet this pre-season. Washington has been sidelined with a knee injury and won’t be able to get on the field till the middle of September. Tutu has had a good camp, but has been invisible during the pre-season games.

Then we have the receivers that are making noise during the pre-season.
Bryan Walters started out the year with a 103 yard kickoff return and then had a terrific showing on Saturday night and scored the game winning touchdown. He is quickly becoming a fan favorite and he is making it difficult for the decision makers to leave him off the roster.

Richard Goodman has shown that he can handle the kickoff return duties and will be a spark on those special teams. He has played well this early season and is challenging for a spot.

Who do you think makes the cut?

Why don’t we drop Tolzien and keep both Walters and Goodman? Wouldn’t that open up a roster spot? I like Tolzien but I think we will be ok with just Rivers and Volek

  • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

@DavidConrique they probably do keep 2 more receivers while keeping tolzien on the roster. it looks like they will keep 6 guys on the roster like they used to do when osgood was on the team

  • DavidConrique

@epadaon What if we kept seven guys? Or would that not work? V Jax, Floyd, Crayton, Brown, Tutu, Goodman and Walters would make seven. I dont see the point in keeping Tolzien but I could be wrong. Our receivers seem to get injured frequently and I love Tutu, Goodman and Walters!! Hard decision!!

  • Kiko Wilson

    Walter’s hands down

  • Bolt Beat

he has been killing it!!!! after walters, would you go with goodman or tutu?

  • Kiko Wilson

    Goodman probably…

  • Bolt Beat

i think i would do the same

  • Trong Lam

I think if we let Walters go it might turn into another wes welker oops.

  • Bolt Beat

    what a mistake that was!

  • JesseFritz

You can drop Washington from this conversation – so its down to 3 players battlingfor 2 spots. I think Goodman will be a practice squad player and Walters/Tutu get the nod. We will still see Goodman this year, injuries are a given,

  • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

@JesseFritz its too bad with washington.. i liked what he added last year, but the injuries caught up to him in the preseason and it allowed the youngsters to steal his spot

  • DavidConrique

Goodman has averaged a little over 30yds per return which is valuable. He will give us a good field position at least once a game… very hard decision and I still think we should try to keep all of them.I was hoping to see Frank Summers get more playing time because he could turn out to be a better blocker than Hester… and more ideal for short yardage downs. What we need is for the league to make it a 55 man roster lol

  • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

@DavidConrique there should be a disabled list where we can place some players on and they can come back later in the season.. that would make a lot of sense in the NFL

  • DavidConrique

@epadaon Agreed. That would be awesome.

  • JesseFritz

Cason can also return punts – he was pretty effective last year. I like Goodman but not as a specialist on the punt team.

  • DavidConrique

@JesseFritz The only problem with that is that Cason could potentially get injured. That would suck… and even though Gilchrist is making strides he is still not capable of handling the #2 CB spot. To play it safe I would rather not use Cason he seems a little skinny and fragile.what do you think?

  • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

@DavidConrique@JesseFritz and cason is playing with one hand right now with an injury… crayton can return punts as well. BUT he is hurt too.

  • DavidConrique

@epadaon@JesseFritz We need to use Goodman for kick returns and Gilchrist for punt returns? I wouldn’t want to use Crayton either… he’s a beast in the slot and we need to make sure he stays healthy. I still remember him making the Broncos secondary look like straight fools

  • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

@DavidConrique@JesseFritz if walters makes the roster.. he might get a chance at taking the punt returns.. he has taken the bulk of them in the pre-season. i would be OK with him doing that job

  • the gorn

As much as I like Ajirotutu, I don’t know if offers anything that Brown doesn’t. Goodman and Walters give us something that the rest of the roster doesn’t, great return men and slot receivers.

  • bolts55

    @epadaon @fansided please @chargers #dontcutwalters

  • epadaon

@bolts55 it would be a shame to see that guy on someone elses team

  • bolts55

@epadaon you mean like the Pats? *wes welker

  • epadaon

@bolts55 exactly! like the pats.. UGH

  • johnnystorm609

todman is a sproles replacement so they should look at him as a returner. so goodman and walters are expendable returners, washington is great on ST and tutu has the size they like so id keep tutu and washington

  • http://boltbeat.com/ epadaon

@johnnystorm609 i like todman and he could be a good returner, but those chances seem to have been given to Goodman and Walters during this preseason. I wish there was a way to just keep them all!

  • DavidConrique

@epadaon@johnnystorm609 Goodman is averaging 30 yds per return. Todman could potentially get injured and I’d like to see Goodman or Walters get bigger roles. But Todman is good also… ahhh the possibilities

  • DavidConrique

@the gorn Yeah you are right… the only thing Tutu offers is depth which was much needed last year. We should make sure were stacked at WR
