A.J. Smith gives vote of confidence to Rivers.

Can Philip Rivers really get the Chargers to the big game? San Diego Chargers GM A.J. Smith sure thinks so. Here is what A.J. had to say about star Quarterback Philip Rivers.

“I believe with my heart and soul that he one day will lead the Chargers to a world championship. He’s a great quarterback—a phenomenal leader with great character, great work habits.”

When asked about the pick/trade of Eli Manning, this is what A.J. had to say.
“He was a value pick,” Smith said of Manning. “He was a bar of gold.”

So here is the rundown. Manning said that if the Bolts took him with the 1st overall pick of the 2004 draft, that he would hold out the entire season and re-enter the draft in 2005. A.J. had a plan of attack and when the Chargers selected him 1st overall, it was not their intent to keep him. After Rivers was selected by the Giants 4th overall in the draft, the Chargers dealt out their Manning pick. What did they receive? Giants got Manning. Chargers got Rivers, an 04′ 3rd rounder, an 05′ 1st rounder, and an 05′ 5th rounder. Those picks in turn led us to Nate Kaeding and Shawne Merriman. So here is the question. Do you agree with A.J.? Is Rivers a Superbowl caliber quarterback?

Whoever voted that Rivers is a choke artist HAS to be a Raiders fan… Idiot….

    Ya think?

The problem facing the Chargers is A. J. Smith. As a GM he is a complete failure. Rivers is a good QB, with a great arm but is not complete in QB skills. He cannot run, stumbles and out of the pocket he is more lucky than good. The overall Bolts problem lies in Ownership. Unlike the Steelers the Charger
s are in a family with poor decision making from the top down. it is foolish to fire a 14-2 Head Coach and then turn around and hire a ” yes man” looser. The GM has made glaring errors in judgement in choosing draft busts; such as Ryan Matthews, Larry English and wasting a # 7 pick on a accident (Demetrius Byrd) victim that never played a down.
Norv Turner may be a great Offensive Coordinator but a miserable failure as a Head Coach. Until Dean Spanos learns to be an informed owner the Chargers are doomed to be also rans when competing for the big (super Bowl) grand prize.
    A fan since 1961.

All do respect to all commenting here and later. There are more moving parts associated with winning “the big one” than most of us can imagine. But pivotal in any organizational success is the dynamics of the relationships involved. Change one member, change the entire dynamics. Not all roles are created equal, but playing rotating Defensive Coordinators, etc is often problematic, as is who’s catching Philip’s passes. Just one broken down, baggy-eyed old fool’s opinion.
