Dirty Sanchez

KC Joyner of ESPN, aka the Football Scientist, wrote this week that Chad Henne and Mark Sanchez are equals. Joyner makes some fantastic points, mostly statistical, but still good. He ends with this:

Having said [all] that, the entirety of the Sanchez/Henne comparison says these two aren’t anywhere near as far apart in performance as their reputations would indicate. The playoffs account for much of Sanchez’s lead here, but playing in New York for maybe the most charismatic coach of our era also goes a long ways toward keeping Sanchez’s perceived status level much higher than that of his South Florida division rival.

First, the coach certainly has something to do with that, so call it the Hard Knocks bump. Never a fan of the show, until I watched this past season. I’m a Sopranos, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Rome and The Wire guy, so I will always give HBO a shot; without question. ReXXXy is a fun guy to watch, he’s a top-5 coach, but, as a Bolts fan it does not take away your hatred for the Jets. Same for the Dolphins. I don’t like Sanchez because he’s enormous in big games and most of those have come against the Bolts/Pats. (Although, he was pathetic in the SD game, but it’s still a W.) I don’t care who coaches him or where he plays. He’s a winner.

Football, and never has been, about numbers, so Joyner can argue all he wants. I will never be convinced Henne is equal to Sanchez until he makes the playoffs and goes 4-2, with a 94.3 efficiency. Baseball and Basketball are great for us stat guys, but the NFL will always be too small of a sample size (16 games a year) and it is ALWAYS about wins. Love ya KC, but I gotta go with the California kid on this one.
