If you were like me and thought AJ Smith was one of the best general managers in the NFL, you and I were both dead wrong. In fact, since the Chargers’ 2004 and 2005 draft classes, they have not had a single draft that yielded even mediocre results, at least as it has to do with the long term, which is what you do in the draft–build for the long term.

Chase Cottrell from Hesperia, Calif.: I hope the Chargers grab Steve Smith. We have a lot of free agency worries with our WR. I think Smith would be an excellent addition for Rivers to throw to and hopefully hit that 5,000 yard mark! What do you think it would take to get him and do you think A.j Smith is considering him? Thanks!

4. San Diego: The Chargers are in good shape. The offensive plan is the same and quarterback Philip Rivers has led several members of the team through workouts. There is a new defensive coordinator in Greg Manusky, but he is a former San Diego coach who will run a similar system to former defensive coordinator Ron Rivera, now the head coach in Carolina. Several San Diego defenders know Manusky.
