Today’s trolley adventures: Should Larry English play defensive end?

As you all know, I (killa) live in San Diego. So being here in San Diego, you can feel and hear the buzz of the Charger fans. You can see the anticipation of the draft. The best fans on the earth, with the best team on the earth! I happen to be on the trolley when the topic of Larry English came up. A theory/question/thought by a group of fellow trolley riders was formed.

Should we put Larry English into the DE rotation? Should he be converted or start over Jacques Cesaire? Now the way I see it, This isn’t a good move. Some random fans thought otherwise, they believe he should have his hand on the ground. As a DE in college at Northern Illinois Larry English was 2x MAC Most Valuable Player (2007, 2008).

In college, he was the nation’s career leader in sacks (31.5), sack yardage (220) and tackles for loss yards (283), ranks second in tackles for loss (63). His 31.5 sacks are a school record, playing in 50 games starting 47 over a course of 5 years.

In 2 years as a Charger, he has 4 career starts and played in 24 games missing half of his rookie season. He has 53 tackles 38 are solo with only 5 sacks in 2 seasons, 1 pass deflection and 1 forced fumble. Not exactly the numbers everyone was hoping for, considering his college career.

What do you think, would he be better suited for a DE? I would have to say no. His build is not of a defensive linemen, I would have to say he is better suited as a linebacker with his build (6-2, 255 lbs). Anyone think this would be a great idea, because I sure don’t. If Larry English can stay healthy and get into the rotation, He could become a dominant player. Let’s not give up on him yet! In most careers, the 3rd year is where stars break out.

Larry English is too small (6-2, 255 lbs) to be playing defensive end especially in our 3-4 scheme. plus he can barely stay healthy enough to stay on the field and playing against premiere 300 pound left tackles will put a beating on him

You’re right. What are the trolley people smoking to come up with English @ end? At 6-2 255 he would get tossed around, a lot like Cesaire does, who isn’t much bigger. Let’s just see if English can stay healthy, crack the starting lineup and at least have 1 decent year. He is already a near-bust at the position he was drafted.

      great point with cesaire!!!

that is why we need to draft a defensive end and a linebacker in this draft! why does this “number 1″ defense have so many needs?!?!?!

This would be so cool. Then we could switch our DB’s with our WR’s sometimes. How awesome would that be? I’m sorry, but this conversation that you had sounds like you were talking to some glazers.

I love saying, ‘that’s why your not a coach right?’

it is probably more likely that we switch our corners to wide outs with norv turner running the team! hahahaha

“Jammer gets pass the defense, Rivers throws it out to him, and…”

there are more stories to come I get into at least
1 or 2 arguments a month whether it be a charger fan or some other fan and yes I was very flustered at a stupid idea when I tryed to shed light on his idea he had nerve enough to say “it works on madden”

News flash this isn’t madden and you cant just convert someone to a different position and they become 99 overall.

Larry English is way too small to play DE especially in the 3-4. Maybe on a D like the Colts or Eagles he could get in the rotation but he definitely couldn’t play DE for the Chargers current scheme.

I know where you got the from though. In Madden if you move English to DE, he’s rated 90+.

Haha… Madden has it all JACKED up then!
