Chargers Slap the Franchise Tag on Vincent Jackson

According to Adam Schefter, The San Diego Chargers have placed the franchise tag on free agent WR Vincent Jackson. That means that Jackson will remain a Charger next season.

A “non-exclusive” franchise player must be offered a one-year contract for an amount no less than the average of the top five salaries at the player’s position in the previous year, or 120 percent of the player’s previous year’s salary, whichever is greater. A non-exclusive franchise player may negotiate with other NFL teams, but if he signs an offer sheet from another team, the original team has a right to match the terms of that offer, or if it does not match the offer and thus loses the player, is entitled to receive two first-round draft picks as compensation. – wikipedia

Jackson is a beast at the wide receiver position and his combination of size and speed makes him difficult to defend. Having him available for the whole season will make a huge impact on the season.

Vincent has been a valuable contributor to our team. We want him to be a Charger. – AJ Smith

So Vincent Jackson will be back next season, what will happen to our other free agent wide receivers. Number 2 receiver, Malcom Floyd, is also a free agent and is a very gifted athlete WHEN he is on the field. He suffered through a lot of injuries last season. WR Legedu Naanee is also a free agent, but his latest run-ins with the police may have sealed his fate.
