San Diego Chargers Pro Bowl TE Antonio Gates was officially disabled for the rest of the season. He was placed on the Injured Reserve list and FB Billy Latsko was signed from the practice squad.
Gates was left on the active roster in preparation to use him in the playoffs. Since there is no more opportunity for the Chargers to make it into the playoffs, Gates no longer needs to be playing the waiting game from the sideline.
Gates was named the starting TE for the Pro Bowl on Tuesday for his accomplishments on his short season. He was on pace to have his best season in his awesome career. He only has played in 10 games this season, but he had 782 yards with 10 TDs in that time.He was slowed by his plantar fasciitis and a toe injury during some of those games as well.
He will rest his bad feet this off-season and prepare for the playoff push in 2011.
FB Billy Latsko will take Antonio Gates spot on the roster and may be used as the starting fullback in Sunday’s game against the Denver Broncos. Both backs Mike Tolbert and Jacob Hester were injured last week and have not been able to practice this week. Latsko played his college ball as a Florida Gator and was signed as a undrafted free agent in 2007 by the Carolina Panthers.
