Party Like An All-Star: Rock Star Dodge Ball
SAN DIEGO, CALIF. – Oct. 13, 2010 — San Diego Chargers linebacker Shaun Phillips and the local chapter of After-School All-Stars are teaming up to host the third annual Dodge Ball Tournament, Party Like An All-Star, on the Woodstock Deck at Hard Rock Hotel San Diego, Monday, Nov. 15, 2010. Registration for the tournament begins at 5:30 p.m., along with a VIP reception from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., and the tournament kick-off is at 6:00 p.m.
The San Diego community is invited to join Shaun Phillips by creating teams of five participants to vie for first prize in the winner-take-all style tournament. Other local celebrities are scheduled to appear alongside Phillips, to serve as judges. Teams will be judged on the creativity of their costumes and team names, in addition to their performance in the tournament.
“I look forward to this event every year, as it’s such a great opportunity to not only benefit a really good cause, but also get the entire community involved,” said Shaun Phillips. “It’s important to raise awareness and support for underprivileged children locally and nationally, and having fun while doing it makes it even more fulfilling.”
All proceeds from SP’s Dodge Ball Tournament will be granted to the San Diego chapter of After-School All-Stars, a program dedicated to providing comprehensive after-school programs that keep kids safe while continuing to nurture their minds. The After-School All-Stars programs offer students academic assistance, independent learning, enrichment activities and sports, which help increase their confidence and encourage success in all areas of their lives—at home, in school and within the community.
“Our programming tremendously expands life opportunities for thousands of local youth, and it is our supporters that are the backbone of our organization,” said San Diego After-School All-Stars Executive Director Tyree Dillingham. “We wanted to reward them with the biggest Dodge Ball tournament yet, including space for more teams, a streamlined registration system with stayclassy.org and Hard Rock Hotel San Diego’s ideal venue and location.”
Dodge ball team rates start at $250 for a team of five. The general public can mingle with the local celebrities at the VIP reception and watch the tournament for $100, or simply attend the tournament for $20 at the door, which includes a reception with Hard Rock Signature hors d’oeuvres. About Shaun Phillips
Charisma and charm are expected in receivers and running backs. Philanthropy and diplomacy is the domain of the quarterback. But Shaun Phillips is proof that all these qualities can exist in one hard-hitting linebacker. Entering his seventh NFL season, linebacker Shaun Phillips has established himself as one of those confident yet understated work horses. He does his job effortlessly, while opponents study him nervously across the line of scrimmage. He seamlessly stepped into his role with the San Diego Chargers and made an immediate impact with 11.5 sacks, the second most by any lineman in the league. No doubt, this “secret” NFL talent is becoming a household name and in 2009 he was able to prove that with 59 tackles and 7 sacks. Phillips was selected by San Diego in the fourth round of the 2004 NFL Draft and described as a “steal” by the Chargers front office. He finished his collegiate career as Purdue’s all-time leader in sacks with 33.5, and was named a second-team All- American his senior year. He has unquestionably exceeded the expectations that usually accompany a fourth-round draft pick. Phillips is a stellar pass rusher with explosive reaction and an incredible knack for harassing the quarterback. But he is not content to leave his accomplishments where they stand, and he continually strives to improve himself both on and off the field. He enjoys directly communicating with fans in social networks and has an active presence on Twitter with more than 359,000 dedicated followers.
