Antwan Barnes Fined $5K, Kevin Burnett Nothing!?

LB Antwan Barnes was fined by the league for $5000 for his hit on QB Sam Bradford. Barnes was hit with an unnecessary roughness penalty on the play. The play happened on 3rd down and would have forced the Rams into a FG attempt, instead the penalty led to a first down and the drive resulted in a TD.

I saw the penalty as a makeup call for the helmet to helmet hit laid out by Kevin Burnett (video above). Burnett was not penalized on the play and did not receive a fine for the hit on Bradford.

The fine is as unnecessary as the unnecessary roughness penalty on the play. I would love to see the video again, but from what I remember, there was nothing malicious on Barnes’ part and the hit did not seem late. The refs were trying to make up for the call that they missed the play earlier, and apparently the league office missed that play as well.

At least Burnett doesn’t have to pay a league fine and we can watch this “clean hit” over and over again on Sam Bradford.
