The article suggests that the Chargers may be looking to unload Shawne Merriman if he does not get on the field and produce.
The linebacking corps seems so depleted right now with the injuries to Larry English, Jyles Tucker and Merriman. Stephen Cooper has already missed a game also. It doesn’t make sense to get rid of a player at a position that is hampered with injuries.
I am sure that there are a couple of teams that would love to have Merriman on their squad. Fans would fear seeing Merriman resurrect his career with another team just like Ladainian Tomlinson has done this far with the Jets and Rodney Harrison did with the Patriots. Merriman was a dominating force till he busted his knee a couple of seasons ago.
Some possible destinations if Merriman is let go are the New England Patriots and the Green Bay Packers. The Patriots use the 3-4 defense and have not had the outside rusher to attack the QB and the Packers just lost linebacker Nick Barnett for a while. The New York Jets may be interested also. They sign everyone else in the league, and would probably would consider adding him to the roster.
