Linebacker Larry English is going to have foot surgery and his return is unknown. He will not be placed on the Injured Reserve list at this time, which will give him the opportunity to return later in the season and possibly the playoffs if he is able to recover in time.

The linebackers squad was already lacking depth with Stephen Cooper and Shawne Merriman sitting on the sideline trying to recover from their injuries. Jyles Tucker missed last week due to personal reasons. This will give more opportunities for the local kid, Antwan Applewhite. Applewhite was an undrafted free agent in 2007 from SDSU. He has contributed in the special teams and recorded a sack last week against Seattle.

When “Lights Out” Merriman recovers from his injury, he will take back his starting position. He has missed a lot of time this season and will be needed to contribute. The linebacking corps is getting thinned out, but there are still plenty of good players to fill the roles that are needed. Expect Shawne to come back strong and Applewhite to contribute big minutes.
