As usual, Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith is showing the NFL world that he will not be pushed around by any player. Not even two pro-bowlers that have been crown jewels in our offense.
Smith is dug in like a tick. When you combine his usual hard-headedness with the fact that the NFL might not be playing in 2011, and you get some angry superstars from time to time. Here are a few choice words from Smith that leave no questions about how he is going to approach this whole debacle.
We are trying to build a championship team, and losing the services of both Vincent and Marcus just made that more difficult — but not impossible. In due time, Coach [Norv] Turner will name two new starters.
It doesn’t get any clearer than that. He is letting Vincent Jackson and Marcus McNeill know that there is nothing to be gained by holding out, and that if you trifle with A.J. Smith, then things will only get worse for you until you show him a little good faith by showing up and getting to work. Time to earn that money, boys. Smith, however, does not suspect they will take that approach. Most people don’t expect to see these two players until November.
It’s hard to see this kind of thing happen, but the NFL is a hard world. The league wouldn’t be what it is if these decisions were easy. I just can’t wait to see what happens. One way… or another.
