Despite saying that Darren Sproles would not be tendered, it will happen anyways. The Chargers are getting thin at running back with the release of veteran back Michael Bennet, but I will say that tendering Sproles is a very smart move that tells us a few things.
The first thing it tells us is that they are open to a future without Sproles. However, with Tomlinson already released and Bennet on his way out, the Chargers want to make sure that they get some draft pick compensation if Sproles hits the market. It also tells us that they will lean toward drafting a running back rather than acquiring a free agent, of which there are’nt any major free agent running backs out there this year, which is no surprise. Teams are locking the good backs down and with good reason.
Even so, it’s no big deal. This years draft crop has some promising running backs strewn throughout and I have every bit of confidence that one will be chosen wisely. I am looking forward to finding out who our feature back will be from now on. Who will it be? I will give you a hint…
It’s not going to be Darren Sproles.
I can tell you that whoever it may be will have some enormous shoes to fill. Fans will have high expectations and the pressure of replacing a Hall of Fame running back will be indescribable. It would be wonderful if C.J. Spiller could fall down so we could select him with the 28th pick of the first round, but that scenario is unlikely. I can still dream, though. Spiller is a fantastic running back with good hands out of the back field and he can kill you in the return game. A utility back like that won’t be waiting on the board very long.
