Antonio Cromartie is under the microscope. Not quite Farve-Watch, but it seems to be one of the biggest buzzes going around the web at the moment. Matt Mosely wrote a fantastic blog in his NFC East domain of ESPN.com explaining why the speculation that Cromartie will end up in Dallas is a bad fit. He points out that there is simply no room for him as a defensive back with the likes of Mike Jenkins, Terence Newman, and Orlando Scandrick around. So most likely, Tashard Choice won’t be wearing Charger blue in 2010.
So, lets think about where Cromartie could go. Obviously SOMEBODY is having problems at the cornerback position and one of these teams in need has to have somebody we would want. Yes, even though Atlanta would love some defensive back help, I don’t think we can get Michael Turner back for Cromartie. Also, dont even think about Willis McGahee. Sorry, folks. He is staying in Baltimore. Time to be realistic.
The conjecture seems to be that Cromartie is being used to bait a team into trading a running back, but I disagree. The Chargers aren’t going to trade for a veteran back or pick one up in free agency. As always, they will look to the draft for a back that they can groom for a long career. Don’t expect them to change their philosophy now. Especially not with the free agent pond as dried up as it is. Perhaps they can us him as part of a dealing for a higher draft choice and then select a running back that way. You never know, but what we now know is that the Chargers are open minded about what they want for Cromartie. However, his recent baggage will make that a little harder.
There is no telling what colors Cromartie will be wearing in 2010 or even what we can get for him and all of his issues. Feel free to comment and speculate below. Let’s see if we can toss in a few educated guesses. The Chargers could use a good ROLB or defensive lineman. Plus there is no solid answer yet for their right tackle situation.
