Zero’d In?

Last night the Chargers had their first night session of training camp, and players seemed to enjoy the atmosphere. Phillip Rivers even noted that it took him back to high school–playing on a lit field where some spots were darker than others.

Hopefully this evening workout, and the one other scheduled for training camp will be the only news from Charger players after the sun goes down, at least until the season starts.

The North County Times ran a story detailing AJ Smith’s hopes for a well-behaved ball club this year, in lieu of new Sheriff Goodell and the dogocide trial. Samano summarized Smith’s feelings: “he’s hoping for zero incidents, so he doesn’t have to enforce zero tolerance.”

Sure, who isn’t hoping for zero incidents? But let’s be realistic here, the season has started and won’t be over until the end of December, not including the playoffs.

That’s 153 days with 55 players. 8415 individual days of opportunity to get caught up with the wrong crowd, drive too fast, tick off a drunk guy at a club or whatever.

Now, I’ll admit, a lot of “trouble” that NFL players get caught up in is due to a non-NFLer trying to take a rich athlete to court, hoping for an out of court settlement. But, people are people, football players are football players. Testosterone and adrenaline are high, losses will occur, fans will get pissed, Norv will hurt someone’s feelings somehow, and circumstances will arise. Steve Foley’s circumstance last year was flat out, unfortunate. But it did occur; murphy’s law.

Here’s hoping for zero incidents, and realizing that chances aren’t as high as USC going undefeated en route to the BCS championship game.
